UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Afterschool programs seem to be most effective when their organization and implementation is supported by both organizational and community resources, according to Penn State human development researchers.

Using a tool to help bridge the gap between research and real life, the researchers evaluated an afterschool program called the Good Behavior Game.

"The Interactive System Framework for Dissemination and Implementation is the tool that helps us to bridge research and practice by synthesizing the available research and figuring out what it will take to help real people and communities use that research," said Emilie Phillips Smith, professor of human development and family studies.

There are three aspects to the Interactive Systems Framework that evaluate the effectiveness of translating research into practice when it comes to preventing substance abuse and problem behavior in school-age children. Smith and colleagues focused specifically on the delivery of the Good Behavior Game, and used the Interactive Systems Framework as their guide. They reported their findings in a recent special issue of the American Journal of Community Psychology.

The Good Behavior Game (GBG) was developed to help improve behavior in elementary school classrooms, and has been proven effective in reducing substance abuse in childhood, adolescence and adulthood. In this study, the researchers introduced GBG in 12 school-based afterschool programs in both urban and rural areas in Pennsylvania and monitored the ability of each program to successfully implement the game.

Eight of the programs were randomly assigned to implement GBG, while the remaining four programs served as the control and continued without any changes.

The researchers assessed each organization's resources, such as staffing ratios, space, materials and regular internal communication, as well as its connectedness to community resources. To help determine afterschool organization resources, program directors completed surveys that asked questions about resource availability, organizational structure and management style. The same survey measured community collaboration using questions addressing the afterschool program's level of collaboration with community agencies, schools and parents; number of volunteers for programs; materials and supplies; funding; and the number of community collaborators that provided resources for children.

Implementation of GBG on the eight sites using the intervention was measured by those coaching the afterschool program staff on best practices. The coaches measured both quantity and quality of implementation.

The researchers found that afterschool programs that rated high for organizational ability, but low for community involvement were less likely to implement GBG effectively. Programs that had a lot of community involvement, but little organizational ability were less likely to implement GBG effectively. If a program had community involvement as well as organizational resources, it fared well.

"This study highlights the importance of considering interactions among multiple levels of general capacity in efforts to promote evidence-based practices in afterschool settings," the researchers wrote.

Good internal organization and the capacity to connect to the community in meaningful ways are trademarks of programs that implement best practices well.

Smith noted that these findings are based on phase one of their pilot study. She and her team have already expanded the implementation of GBG to 72 afterschool program sites, and are further exploring its influence and effect.

Ronda Rousey was more worried about her sports bra staying on than being submitted

During their main event bout at UFC 157, Liz Carmouche took Ronda Rousey's back and had her in a neck crank. The crank was so deep that Rousey inadvertently bit Carmouche's arm. But Rousey told the Fuel TV aftershow that she was never worried about submitting to Carmouche. Instead, she was concerned about a wardrobe malfunction.

?On the ground I feel so comfortable in every position, so I never feel in danger and I take a lot of risks. I felt fine with her on my back. I was more concerned with my sports bra staying on while she was choking me because I felt safe and in control," Rousey said.

Rousey won a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics in judo, so submissions have been part of her life for a long time. In fact, Rousey has spoken often about how her mother taught her judo by waking her up with an armbar. While the neck crank was uncomfortable, it wasn't new.

What is new is having to worry about a sports bra not doing its job. Come on, sports bra. You had one job. Thankfully, it did stay in place, and Rousey went on to submit Carmouche seconds before the end of the first round.

Police: MC Hammer pulled over for expired tags

(AP) ? A sheriff's department spokesman in Northern California says a Dublin police officer stopped and then arrested MC Hammer because the '90s rap star was driving a car with expired registration and refused to get out of the vehicle.

Lt. Herb Walters of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said in a statement issued Monday that Hammer was "very argumentative" with the officer during the traffic stop late Thursday. He says it's unclear who owns the car.

Hammer eventually came out of the car and was arrested for investigation of obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties.

Hammer, who was born Stanley Burrell, has offered a different account, suggesting he was the victim of racial profiling. He tweeted on Saturday that the officer asked him if he were on parole or probation and tried to pull him out through the car window.

Jesse Jackson Jr. Guilty Plea: Ex-Congressman And Wife To Plead Guilty To Federal Fraud Charges

(Adds details, reaction; Jacksons intend to plead guilty)
By David Ingram and Mary Wisniewski
WASHINGTON/CHICAGO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Former Chicago congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., son of the famed civil rights leader, plans to plead guilty to charges filed on Friday accusing him of misusing $750,000 in campaign funds, his attorney said.
Jackson's wife, Sandi Jackson, has also agreed to plead guilty to a related charge of filing false tax returns, according to her attorneys. She resigned her seat on the Chicago city council last month.
Both Jacksons, once considered one of the most powerful couples in the city, issued statements accepting responsibility.
"I offer no excuses for my conduct and I fully accept my responsibility for the improper decisions and mistakes I have made," said Jesse Jackson Jr, a Democrat, in his statement. He faces fraud and conspiracy charges.
Jackson's wife said in a statement that she was "deeply sorry" for her actions.
Once considered one of the most promising black politicians in the United States, Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned his congressional seat on Nov. 21 for health reasons, acknowledging at the time that he was under investigation by the FBI.
Jackson was once talked about as having the potential to become the first black president, noted Andy Shaw, president and CEO of the Chicago-based Better Government Association.
"Instead of heading for the White House, he is heading for the big house, and that is an enormous fall from grace," Shaw said in a radio interview on WBBM-AM.
Jackson's father, a former presidential candidate, was not immediately available for comment.
Prosecutors said at least seven people were involved in the scheme to divert campaign funds to personal uses.
Among the accusations is that Jesse Jackson, Jr. shipped a $43,350 men's Rolex watch purchased with campaign funds to his D.C. address. He also shipped fur capes and parkas purchased with $5,150 in campaign funds to the Beverly Hills home of an unnamed person, the documents said.
As part of the case, the government said Jackson must forfeit tens of thousands of dollars in celebrity memorabilia derived from the alleged crimes, including a $4,600 fedora that once belonged to late pop star Michael Jackson.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, if convicted, Jackson faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and his wife three years, but defendants who accept responsibility are typically sentenced to much less than the maximum term.

JACKSON'S ABSENCE
Jackson disappeared from public view early in the summer of 2012 and speculation swirled for weeks about his condition. He said in late June he had taken a leave of absence two weeks earlier for treatment of what was then described as exhaustion.
Jackson issued a statement in early July saying his health problems were more serious and he needed extended in-patient treatment for unspecified "physical and emotional ailments."
Days later, his physician said the congressman was receiving intensive care for a "mood disorder" and was expected to make a full recovery. The Mayo Clinic announced in late July that Jackson had been admitted.
He was treated for at least six weeks at Mayo for bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression, which is marked by highs and lows of mood and can be treated by medication and psychological counseling.
Representative Danny Davis, another Chicago Democrat, said he believed the alleged offenses were related to the disorder, the symptoms of which can include reckless behavior, such as spending sprees.
"It's kind of beyond one's imagination," Davis told Reuters. "A $5,000 football - that's kind of bizarre. It's so sad and so unfortunate."
Jackson made it to Congress in 1995 after winning a special election triggered by the resignation of Representative Mel Reynolds, who was convicted of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. Reynolds is now vying for the seat again in a Feb. 26 Democratic primary.
Jackson was a reliable liberal vote during his 17-year House career, supporting increases in the minimum wage, the expansion of environmental regulations and gay rights and, in 2008, the bailout of the teetering U.S. financial system.
He was also an early advocate of a strict timeline for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. He was easily re-elected in November 2012, despite his absence from the district. His resignation came two weeks after the election.
In addition to the federal investigation of his campaign finances, Jackson had been the subject of a House ethics committee probe over an alleged bribe offered by a Jackson supporter in 2008 to then-Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.
The bribe was said to be intended to entice Blagojevich to appoint Jackson to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama. Jackson has admitted to lobbying for the seat, but denied knowing about any money offered to Blagojevich, who has since been convicted of corruption and imprisoned. Home Improvement Projects: Worth Your Money, or a Waste of Time ...

The time is coming in the DFW area to do your Spring cleaning and start those outdoor and indoor improvements on your home. Whether you decide to landscape your yard, put in a pool, paint your home inside and out, or are planning an addition, you need to weigh your options and consider why you are taking on the project. If you are doing the improvements to a home that you plan on living in for the long haul, then your dollar is being spent on your own personal satisfaction. However, if you are looking to increase the value or curb appeal of your home, you need to be careful to ensure that you are going to get your money back. Many home improvements turn out to be a waste of time and money that do little to improve your home?s value; however, they may just set your home apart in the eyes of a perspective buyer. So, before digging a giant hole in your yard for that pool, be sure to do your homework, and then decide if it is all worth it.

Swimming pools and outdoor living areas are a sexy addition to your home. We dream about those hot Texas days spent sipping margaritas poolside, while our friends splash around in the pool. You might just become the coolest of all your friends during the hottest August days; but, before you go buying those water weenies, consider the costs. Let?s start with the installing of the pool itself. The average price of an inground pool is $22,000, and can easily hit the $50K mark if you get carried away. While a pool may be attractive to potential buyers, it can also scare them away. Families with young children may not want to take on the safety hazards that a pool can bring. Plus, you will never get back what you spent installing the pool. Another drawback to owning a pool is the maintenance and costs associated with it. Pool maintenance will run you about $2,200 annually, not to mention the cost of heating it if you choose to do so in the cooler months, and the additional costs added to your homeowners insurance. You also should be aware of the replacement of any parts and the repairing of any cracks that will inevitably form. You might even decide to add an outdoor kitchen, sunroom, or other living space to go along with your new swimming hole. Again, this can be appealing to buyers, or be a great place to hang out almost year round in DFW. There are many options and price ranges you can go with. Built in barbeques, sinks, ovens, decking, fire pits, entertainment centers, and furniture can make this space a popular place on a variety of budgets. So, if you are planning on enjoying this all for yourselves, the by all means, go nuts. However do not expect to see all that money in return when you choose to sell.

If you are thinking of some indoor improvements, like a kitchen remodel, for example, consider the current condition. If your cabinetry is tattered and falling apart, your appliances are out of date, and your flooring is awful, then it may be an investment with a great return. If everything is still in pretty good shape, the adage, ?If it aint broke, don?t fix it? might be your best advice. The same goes for flooring and carpet throughout your home. Sometimes a good buffing or shampooing can bring new life to your floors.

One project that can really improve the look and value of your home is new paint. Painting the inside, outside, and even the front door can really put a new shine on a home?s old look. If you plan on selling anytime soon, it is a good idea to keep the colors neutral. Perspective buyers might be scared away by the blood red bathroom walls. Again, if you are doing this for yourselves, then go ahead and paint your hallway that baby-poop orange you?ve had your eye on! The good thing about painting is that it can be a relatively cheap project and is only semi-permanent.

Other cheap ways to make your aging home seem new involve some old fashioned elbow grease. A good weekend clean can add a sparkle that will last a long time. Pay special attention to tile, grout, and caulking in kitchens and bathrooms, and if needed, replace the grout or caulking in the problemed area. Having a garage sale and/or making a run to the dump is a great way to get rid of clutter and even reclaim some of your home?s square footage. Plus, it will prevent you from ending up on a reality show about hoarding. Replacing cabinet hardware is also easy, and can add a new look to your drawers and cabinets.

There are countless options and reasons for making over a home. They range from hundreds of dollars to tens-of-thousands of dollars. Some are do-it-yourself projects, while some require bringing in an expert. Whatever your flavor may be, do some research prior to jumping into a project, and carefully weigh the costs versus the rewards.

Canonical has announced that the Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones would be available from 21st February. Canonical announced Ubuntu OS for smartphones last month, and we brought you a demo of the Ubuntu OS running on the Galaxy Nexus from the International CES 2013. At CES Canonical said to us that they are in talks with several OEMs to launch a Ubuntu smartphone. Earlier this month Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth announced that the Ubunutu would be available devices as early as October 2013.

Check out our hands-on video

Ubuntu OS has radical user interface and offers completely new user experience. The Ubuntu Developer Preview would let the developers familiarize themselves with the new OS. Ubuntu smartphone OS has complete touch interface, unique lock screen, home screen with favorite apps, missed calls and customizable widgets, swipe gestures to cycle through list of apps and app recommendations. It also has notifications panel that lets you drag through the icons to view the settings.

Ubuntu code will deliver a mobile, tablet, desktop or TV experiences depending on the device it is installed on, or where it is docked. Ubuntu 13.10 (due in October) will include a complete entry-level smartphone experience.

Preview SDK and App Design Guides are already available from developer.ubuntu.com and design.ubuntu.com/apps. It uses single application binary phone, tablet, PC and TV, which makes it easy to develop apps in all these platforms.

The Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones would be available from wiki.ubuntu.com/TouchInstallProcess from Thursday, 21st February. Canonical would be present at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona from 25th to 28th February, where users can get their phones flashed. They would also showcase range of devices running Ubuntu smartphone OS.

Rome priests react with sadness to Pope's resignation

Paulist Father Francesco Cupello speaks to CNA in St. Peter's Square after Pope Benedict XVI's meeting with the priests of Rome in Paul VI Hall on Feb 14, 2013. Credit: File Photo/CNA

.- After meeting with Pope Benedict on Thursday, priests from the Rome diocese said they are sad he is retiring and that he was a great gift to the Church.

??We?re sad because a Pope is not only a theoretical leader, he?s the man to whom you give your allegiance and your vows, so there?s a direct link and a sadness in that,? said Father Robert, after the Pope met Feb. 14 with the clergy of his diocese at Paul VI Hall.

?It?s very sad because we?re losing a wonderful shepherd and a wonderful theologian, but he is also being realistic about the other acts of governance that he has to do,? Fr. Robert told CNA.

The priest, who is originally from South Africa, also praised the Pope?s intellectual contributions, calling him ?a giant in the Church.?

In keeping with his academic gifts, Pope Benedict spent his final meeting with the priests of his diocese sharing his thoughts about participating in Vatican II and how he understands it.

?He?s been a man who has had a wonderful influence in terms of the need to understand our faith,? he said.

Another priest, Paulist Father Francesco Cupello, said he has supported Pope Benedict for 35 years.

?I love this Pope very much, because I was his supporter since 1978, during the conclave when John Paul I and John Paul II were elected,? said Fr. Francesco of Rome?s Society of St. Paul.

?I was his supporter, so I was so happy when he was elected and very, very sad now,? he added.

The priest, who forms part of the order in charge of one of the world?s biggest Catholic publishing houses, said the Pope influenced him a lot in how he interprets the Second Vatican Council.

?I was very happy with his ?Summorum Pontificum? and when he restored the ancient liturgy, because he had a lot of courage to do this.?

Fr. Francesco said that this ?meant very much? and that it was ?a great gift to the whole Church.?

?It changed my life because I love ancient liturgy and now I celebrate it whenever I?ve the possibility,? he said.

A Tanzanian priest studying in Rome also said Pope Benedict has greatly influenced his priesthood and his life.

?His spiritual life has influenced me as a priest because he was a real father and indicated that you celebrate Mass with full attention, allowing people to participate fully in the liturgy and for them to recognize the coming of God in the consecration,? said Father Patrick Tibangayuka, who is studying for his PhD in philosophy.

?He has also influenced me in his spirit of listening,? said the African priest, who is originally from the Diocese of Bukoba.

?He would listen to everybody with an eye of respect and of reasoning and he would give clear answers, basing himself on the Church?s teachings, building himself on the Scripture and on tradition,? he added.

Fr. Tibangayuka said he was shocked when he heard about Pope Benedict?s resignation, but he thinks it was a ?courageous decision? and ?has shown great humility.?
?
?Yesterday at the (general) audience he said don?t be afraid because Jesus is there, so we are confident, and the other Pope who is coming will carry on the mission ? he will be a hard worker, a holy man and courageous as the Pope has been,? he said.

The Tanzanian priest called Pope Benedict?s lecture on the Second Vatican Council that took place yesterday ?interesting.?

?We have had a lecture of a real soul and I?m grateful we were able to participate,? said Fr. Tibangayuka.

Robbie Rogers Gay: U.S. Soccer Player Comes Out, 'Steps Away' From Sport

Robbie Rogers

Robbie Rogers #16 of the United States celebrates his second half goal during the game against Mexico at Lincoln Financial Field on August 10, 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In a poignant post entitled "The Next Chapter..." on his personal website, U.S. soccer player Robbie Rogers has come out as gay and also stepped away from professional soccer.

The 25-year-old midfielder from California played in 18 games for the U.S. men's national team and starred for the Columbus Crew before leaving the MLS for Europe.

Although he described his playing career as giving him "more joy than I could have ever imagined," the pain in Rogers' writing is palpable at times.

Secrets can cause so much internal damage. People love to preach about honesty, how honesty is so plain and simple. Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay. Try convincing yourself that your creator has the most wonderful purpose for you even though you were taught differently.

According to Goal.com, Rogers is now "one of the few professional soccer players to openly declare his homosexuality."

CLICK HERE to read the full statement.

Rogers shared the heartfelt post on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

Among the many responses were notable messages of support from some of his peers.

Chris Pontius
Much respect . Nothing but support for you

Rogers played for Leeds during the 2011-2012 season and saw limited action with Stevenage during the 2012-2013 campaign.

Astrophile: Evaporating planet shows how worlds vanish

Astrophile is our weekly column on curious cosmic objects, from the solar system to the far reaches of the multiverse

Object: Evaporating exoplanet
Distance: 1500 light years

1. Preheat star to 2000 kelvin.
2. Take one Mercury-sized rocky world and place in a 16-hour-long orbit.
3. Bake for 10 billion years or until obliterated.

It's a recipe that won't win any culinary awards, but when turned into a computer model, it could explain the strange sighting last year of a rapidly disappearing exoplanet around the small sunlike star KIC 12557548. The model hints that this world is now about the size of Earth's moon and may even be down to its naked iron core, which would make it the smallest known exoplanet. If true, the tiny remnant could help us better understand what's inside our home world.

Dubbed KIC 12557548b, the planet was discovered using NASA's Kepler space telescope. Kepler spots exoplanets by looking for the regular dimming of stars caused by orbiting planets that transit them ? pass in front of their star ? as seen from Earth. The more light is blocked, the larger the planet.

KIC 12557548b is small and so close to its star that its year lasts just 16 hours. But the dimming caused by the planet varies wildly, suggesting it is surrounded by a gigantic, ever-changing cloud of material.

"It basically looks like a comet that's very erratic, with a long trailing tail of dust," says Eugene Chiang of the University of California, Berkeley, who was part of a team that found the planet last year. The team thinks the rocky surface is being evaporated away by the intense heat of its star.

Chiang and colleague Daniel Perez-Becker have now come up with a general model of how rocky planets evaporate, based in part on Kepler data. Assuming KIC 12557548b started out about the same size as Mercury, they found it should take roughly 10 billion years to vaporise completely, and that the process happens at different rates over time.

Bubbling away

"If you start with a Mercury-sized object, it can sit there very happily for billions of years, very slowly bubbling away," says Chiang. Eventually though, enough of the planet is vaporised into space that its gravity is greatly reduced, making it even easier for material to escape and speeding up its destruction.

This runaway phase lasts for the last one per cent of the planet's life, and it's thought KIC 12557548b has just 70 million or so years left. "When you compare it to the age of the star, almost certainly billions of years, it's just a blink of an eye," says Chiang.

If the planet is already stripped to its core, it should be possible to look at the surrounding cloud and identify its components, adds Ignas Snellen of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, who was not involved in the work. "This would be the first time we can see a core, which is exciting," he says.

Chiang and Perez-Becker's model also suggests that some ancient planets were vaporised before we could ever observe them, while other Mercury-sized worlds are just teetering on the edge of destruction. Spotting such doomed planets will prove difficult ? we only see KIC 12557548b because its dust cloud covers an area about the size of Jupiter.

Saul Rappaport of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who led the original discovery of the evaporating world, thinks Kepler is up to the task. The real trick is proving an object is an evaporating planet rather than a fainter star that orbits the target star, and which can look like a transiting world.

Rappaport's team have just completed new observations of KIC 12557548b with the Hubble Space Telescope and are analysing the data to try and rule out this scenario. But he thinks the new model makes the case for an evaporating planet much stronger: "It seems better and better."

Lovers' hearts beat in sync

Feb. 13, 2013 ? When modern-day crooner Trey Songz sings, "Cause girl, my heart beats for you," in his romantic ballad, "Flatline," his lyrics could be telling a tale that's as much physiological as it is emotional, according to a University of California, Davis, study that found lovers' hearts indeed beat for each other, or at least at the same rate.

Emilio Ferrer, a UC Davis psychology professor who has conducted a series of studies on couples in romantic relationships, found that couples connected to monitors measuring heart rates and respiration get their heart rate in sync, and they breathe in and out at the same intervals.

To collect the data, the researchers conducted a series of exercises, sitting 32 heterosexual couples a few feet away from each other in a quiet, calm room. The couples did not speak or touch.

"We've seen a lot of research that one person in a relationship can experience what the other person is experiencing emotionally, but this study shows they also share experiences at a physiological level," Ferrer said.

The couples, in one of the exercises, were asked to sit across from each other and mimic each other, but still not speak, and researchers collected very similar results.

The researchers also mixed up the data from the couples. When the two individuals were not from the same couple, their hearts did not show synchrony, nor did their breathing closely match.

Additionally, both partners showed similar patterns of heart rate and respiration, but women tended to adjust theirs to their partners more. This was true not only for physiological but for day-to-day emotional experiences as well.

"In other words, we found that women adjust in relationship to their partners," said Jonathan Helm, a UC Davis psychology doctoral student and primary author of the study. "Her heart rate is linked to her partner's. I think it means women have a strong link to their partners -- perhaps more empathy."

Why Ezekiel Ansah Is the Most Unlikely Success Story in Entire 2013 NFL Draft

Ezekiel Ansah played his first football game in 2010. Less than three years later, the BYU defensive end is a potential first-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

The typical NFL draft prospect starts his football career in elementary school, becomes a standout by the time he is in high school, is recruited by major college football programs and starts his college football career with NFL dreams.

Ansah?s journey has been much more complicated, and makes it all the more remarkable that he is on the verge of being an early NFL draft selection.

?

Before Football

Ansah was born and raised in the country of Ghana, where the word football means association football, not American football. There, he attended Presbyterian Boys? Secondary School and had dreams of playing professionally in another sport?basketball.

"I always wanted to play pro basketball when I was a kid," Ansah told Sports Illustrated. "Coming to America, I had an idea I would have a chance to play in the league.?

Ansah was right that he had a chance to play professional sports. He just didn?t know yet that it would be in a sport that he had never played before.

After converting to the Mormon faith as a high school senior, Ansah came to BYU in the fall of 2008 hoping to become a Division I basketball player. According to SI, he tried out for the Cougars? basketball team in both 2008 and 2009 in an attempt to make his basketball dreams a reality, but failed to make the cut both times.

Ansah first found athletic success at BYU in track and field, walking on the team in 2009 according to the Deseret News. Ansah?s fastest time that season in the 200-meter dash was 21.9 seconds?a time not quite fast enough to contend nationally at the NCAA level, but an incredibly fast time for a 6'6" athlete built more like a discus thrower than a sprinter.

This video by BYU Sports TV from 2011 looks at Ansah's journey from Ghana to playing football at BYU.

?

From Walk-On To Superstar

It takes a rare athlete to make a Division I football program having never played the game before, let alone become one of the best players in the nation and an NFL prospect. At 6?5?, 274 pounds with sprinter speed, Ansah is that rare athlete.

According to SI, Ansah was 250 pounds when he walked in BYU head football coach Bronco Mendenhall?s door in the fall of 2010. Yet although he had never played football, he caught onto the game quickly enough to see action in six games that season.

Ansah?s fast development from his first football practice to seeing action at a Division I football program says a lot about his ability to learn quickly and his work ethic, but also indicates his natural athleticism.

But even coming into his senior season, Ansah was an unknown outside of BYU. A linebacker who notched only seven tackles as a junior, Ansah was on no one?s draft radar heading into his senior season.

It didn?t take long for him to emerge in 2012.

Ansah began making a name for himself in his first game of the season, coming up with two tackles for loss and a pass breakup in BYU?s season opener, a 30-6 victory over Washington State. Through six games, Ansah already had eight tackles for loss, three sacks and three pass breakups, and was starting to get his name tossed around by draft media as a potential early draft pick.

Ansah finished his senior season with 13 tackles for loss (4.5 sacks), 10 passes defended and 62 total tackles.

?

Why Ezekiel Ansah Could Be Drafted Very High

If not for a rare combination of size, length, quickness and speed, Ansah?s transition from football newcomer to star defensive lineman likely never would have been possible. Now, Ansah enters the 2013 NFL draft with one of the highest upsides of any prospect in the draft class.

Ansah fits the textbook definition of a boom-or-bust prospect.

With very little football experience, Ansah?s game is understandably raw, and if he is going to make it at the next level, his pass-rush technique needs to become much more developed.

Ansah?s lack of experience, however, could actually help his draft stock. There is reason to believe that Ansah has only scratched the surface of his football potential, considering his vast improvement in his senior season, which gives an NFL team the possibility of taking advantage of his raw ability and molding him into a star for their defense.

?

Breaking Down Ansah?s Game

Ansah has great length with 34 5/8-inch arms and an 82-inch wingspan, and he is a terrific athlete. With very good speed, he can bring heavy pressure when he has a lane into the backfield, and he can track down runners in space and downfield. He has good lateral quickness and great leaping ability for a defensive end.

As a pass-rusher, Ansah is very much a work in progress. He does not have a particularly explosive first step, but when he gets past his blocker(s), he can bring heavy pressure because he is often faster and quicker than the opposing quarterback.

Ansah has the strength to bull-rush his opponents, and the quickness to make blockers miss. He can rush both around the edge and inside, and although he often drew double-teams as a senior at BYU, he was often to split them and bring penetration.

His hand technique as a pass-rusher, however, is undeveloped, and he will not be able to have the same success he did in college beating blockers on his size, speed and strength alone.

While it would be a massive stretch to project Ezekiel Ansah as the next J.J. Watt, one skill he does have in common with Watt is his ability to bat down passes. Ansah has great vertical leaping ability, and does a great job timing his leaps at the line of scrimmage to get his long arms and big hands on passes. His 10 passes defended in his senior season tied Michigan State?s William Gholston as the most for a defensive lineman during the 2012 season.

As a run defender, Ansah is inconsistent. Although he has the strength to drive back linemen and set the edge, he is too often taken out of the play by his blockers. When he gets past his blockers, he can chase down runners with his speed, but he needs to become a more sure tackler, especially if he were to convert to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.

In addition to his contributions on defense, Ansah also played on special teams, and has the speed to continue being an asset there at the next level.

?

Where Ansah Should Be Drafted

Ansah is very enticing because many of his flaws are coachable and learnable, and he has the natural athletic gifts that can only be inherited. But if Ansah ends up as an early first-round draft pick, it will be because a team becomes overly enticed by his potential and ignores his flaws.

There is certainly a lot to like about Ansah. His success story is remarkable and heartwarming, and could not have been accomplished without work ethic, intelligence and natural ability. His ceiling is among the highest of all draft prospects in the 2013 class, and he has the potential to be a three-down difference-maker at the next level.

Many of Ansah?s flaws are correctable. Even with a lack of pass-rushing moves and a stance too upright, he was among the nation?s most productive defensive linemen in his senior season.

Where should Ezekiel Ansah be drafted?

Where should Ezekiel Ansah be drafted?

  • Top 10

  • Top 20

  • Late first round

  • Second round

  • Third round

  • Day 3

What Ansah isn?t, however, is the next Jason Pierre-Paul some make him out to be. While he has the speed, explosive leaping ability and length that help to make JPP great, he lacks the first-step quickness of an elite pass-rusher.

Ansah is best suited to play on a 4-3 defense, where he can rotate in and out at defensive end and also have the ability to line up as an inside pass-rusher. Given his measurables, he will certainly draw interest from 3-4 teams as well, but would have to become stronger at the point of attack to play as a 5-technique defensive end, and would have to become a more consistent tackler in space to play outside linebacker.

Given the potential he has shown and the physical upside he has, Ansah is well worth taking a chance with on Day 2. But although the deficiencies in his game make him a very risky first-round pick, there is a strong likelihood that a team will be intrigued enough by his success story and his potential to draft him very early.
