MLPostFactor Installs Mountain Lion on Older Macs

MLPostFactor Installs Mountain Lion on Older MacsMac: When Mountain Lion was released last summer it dropped support for older generation Macs from 2006-2008. There were workaround to get it to work, but they were far from user-friendly. MLPostFactor is a utility that makes the process of getting Mountain Lion installed on an older Mac a bit simpler.

Using MLPostFactor requires you to download Mountain Lion from Apple, and then set up a partition on your hard drive to install. From there, MLPostFactor takes care of the rest. We weren't able to test this on our own, but users in the MacRumors forums thread have reported success with a number of older MacBooks. That said, people have experienced some glitches with some graphics processes, sleep mode, Bluetooth, and iSight, so give it a try at your own risk. Of course, since you're installing it on a new partition you won't mess anything up too much. Head over to the MacRumors forum thread below for the full guide.

Penney CEO's challenge: Can it be fixed?

NEW YORK (AP) ? There won't be an easy fix for J.C. Penney ? if it can be fixed at all.

As Mike Ullman takes the reins again less than two years after his departure, he faces a Herculean task to undo the mess left by CEO Ron Johnson, who was ousted Monday. With the department store retailer in the middle of a disastrous overhaul that has driven away shoppers, the 66-year-old Ullman has to quickly figure out what parts of Johnson's legacy to keep and what to trash.

The overarching question is whether the century-old company can be saved at all. Very few retailers have recovered from a 25 percent sales drop in a single year, like that suffered by Penney under Johnson's watch. On Tuesday, the retailer's stock price dropped more than 12 percent to a 12-year-low of $13.93 as investors' worries escalated about Penney's future.

"Ullman can't go back to the old ways, but he can't do what Ron Johnson did," said Ron Friedman, head of the retail and consumer products group at Marcum LLP, a national accounting and consulting firm. "I think there will be a combination of the two. But he has to make some quick moves."

Apparently, the company's board of directors felt Ullman, who served as Penney's CEO for seven years and is known for strong relationships with suppliers and calm, steady execution, would be the best choice right now to secure the company's future. But it could take Ullman 18 months to stabilize the business, says Burt Flickinger III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group. He gives the chain a 50-50 chance to survive.

"The odds are declining every day," said Flickinger, noting that rivals like Macy's are taking away market share. "Competitors see blood in the water."

Johnson, the mastermind behind Apple Inc.'s successful retail stores, lasted just 17 months. He faced an ever-growing chorus of critics calling for his resignation as they lost faith in the aggressive overhaul. The rapid-fire changes included getting rid of coupons and most discounts in favor of everyday low prices, bringing in new brands and remaking its outdated stores. Johnson's goal was to reinvent the stodgy retailer into a mini-mall of hip specialty shops.

Instead, Penney's loyal shoppers went in search of deals elsewhere, and the chain didn't attract the younger and more affluent shoppers that Johnson coveted. Now the 1,100-store chain is burning through cash. In the past year, the company lost nearly a billion dollars and saw its revenue tumble by nearly $4.3 billion to $12.98 billion. Customer traffic dropped 13 percent. Steep sales declines have continued, say analysts, even though Johnson added back some sales events and coupons early this year.

Some speculate that Ullman may ditch the everyday price strategy and instead ramp up the return to discounting and coupons to get shoppers back in the stores. But that will still be an expensive move. Michael Binetti, an analyst at UBS Investment Research, and others believe that Ullman also will temporarily suspend the rollout of the mini-shops, which started late last year and feature such brands as Joe Fresh and Levi's.

When the overhaul of its home area is completed next month, the company will have carved up 30 percent of its store space into mini-boutiques. But after that, Ullman is expected to pull back the pace of the rollout as Penney tries to conserve cash. That means that some suppliers who expected to have mini-shops could be left in the lurch.

Ullman also will have to find ways to boost employee morale amid severe cuts that have slashed the work force by nearly 30 percent. As of February, Penney employed 116,000 full- and part-time workers, down from 159,000 a year ago.

Whatever Ullman ends up doing, analysts expect him to be thoughtful and deliberate in his moves. That's a big difference from Johnson, who was criticized for not testing his strategies in a few stores, particularly the pricing plan.

In a statement released by Penney on Monday, Ullman said he plans to immediately "engage with the company's customers, team members, vendors and shareholders, to understand their needs, view and insights" and then work with the management team and the board to develop a game plan.

"(The board) chose stability and experience, in my mind," said Antony Karabus, president of SD Retail Consulting. "Instead of big, grandiose ideas, what they need now is someone to stabilize and execute effectively. He has a calm way about him. If anyone can do it, he can, because he knows the business. He knows the customers."

Bud Konheim, president of designer fashion brand Nicole Miller, which has sold an affordable version to Penney since 2005, agrees.

"(Ullman) is very smart. Everybody loves him. He's a strong executive but he's not a bull in the china shop," he said. "He's not as much show biz as Ron Johnson. He flies under the radar."

Still, there are concerns. Penney struggled under Ullman's first regime, though the company was still profitable. Ullman brought in Penney's first mini-shops, including beauty company Sephora and exclusive names like MNG by Mango, a European clothing brand. But he didn't do much to transform the store's shopping experience or to attract new customers.

That showed up in the sales figures. During Ullman's previous tenure, from December 2004 to October 2011, sales declined from $18.18 billion in 2004 to $17.6 billion in 2010, his last full year at the company. Sales per square foot dropped to $155 from $177, according to Deborah Weinswig, an analyst at Citi Research.

When Ullman left Penney in November 2011, the situation wasn't great. But it also wasn't the crisis it is now. The company's credit ratings are deep into junk status. Its stock has lost 67 percent of its value since February 2012 when investors bullish on Johnson's grand plans drove the price up around $43. That makes it that much harder for Ullman to turn business around.

History also dictates that the odds are against a sales recovery. Last fall, Credit Suisse surveyed 17 retailers that reported annual declines of anywhere from 15 percent to 25 percent in a single year from 2000 to 2011. Of that group, only four retailers recovered the lost revenue ? Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Ann Inc., Guess Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc. ? and it took an average of three years to do so. The rest were either acquired by a private equity company, went bankrupt or merged with another public company.

Ultimately, Penney's fate lies in once-loyal shoppers like Beth Williams, 39, who deserted the chain early last year.

Williams, a writer and mother of a 3-year-old from Plum, Pa., said she used to shop at Penney once a month for her family. But that changed when her local store got rid of coupons and sales events. She also doesn't like the new styles that she believes only target customers in their teens and 20s.

Williams says she would go back if Penney had more sales and brought back more traditional clothing like khaki shorts with forgiving fits.

"I would go back," she said. "I miss it. That was my go-to store for a long time, and then it changed."

BLUEGRASS STATE GLORY

The state of Kentucky is 2-for-2.

The Louisville Cardinals will be taking the second consecutive NCAA national championship back to the Bluegrass State. The Kentucky Wildcats and coach John Calipari captured the crown last year.

Monday night it was Rick Pitino and the Cardinals' turn. They were the favorites and the top-seeded team in the tournament didn't disappoint ? winning in entertaining fashion.

Louisville rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to beat Michigan 82-76.

And in doing so, Pitino made history ? he became the first coach to lead two different schools to the title. The other? Those rival Wildcats.

And the ride for the basketball-crazed state isn't over.

Next up is the Louisville women's team, which plays Connecticut Tuesday night for the title.

___

LOUISVILLE WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Rick Pitino has history.

The Cardinals' coach became the first to win titles at two different schools, adding to the one he won with Kentucky by leading Louisville to a 82-75 victory over Michigan on Monday night.

Louisville trailed by 12 early in the game, but turned up the pressure on defense, kept up their hot shooting on offense and made enough free throws down the stretch to put away the Wolverines.

Luke Hancock, who led Louisville with 22 points, made two foul shots with 29.8 seconds left for an 80-74 lead. And after Tim Hardaway Jr. scored at the other end for Michigan, Peyton Siva added two more foul shots with 12.9 seconds to go to seal the game.

Trey Burke's 3-pointer in the closing seconds missed everything and went out of bounds, and the Cardinals started to celebrate as Russ Smith was fouled with 2 seconds left.

When the buzzer sounded, the Cardinals rushed to center court and began jumping as fireworks exploded in the Georgia Dome and confetti fell onto the floor.

___

LOUISVILLE'S RALLY

Louisville has stormed back and taken the lead since trailing Michigan by 12 points in the first half of Monday night's championship game.

Michigan led the top-seeded Cardinals 33-21 in the first half. The Cardinals recovered to lead 71-64 with 4:34 remaining ? a 19-point turnaround.

Luke Hancock started the comeback with 16 points in the first half.

___

RECORD TURNOUT

The attendance for Monday night's Louisville-Michigan game at the Georgia Dome is 74,326 ? a record for a championship game.

The record may not last long. The 2014 Final Four will be held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Attendance there could reach 80,000.

? Charles Odum

___

FOUL TROUBLE

Foul trouble is starting to mount for Louisville.

Russ Smith and Peyton Siva, the Cardinals' starting guards, each picked up their third foul early in the second half, along with Luke Hancock, who had been hot from the 3-point line.

The foul trouble in the backcourt is especially troublesome for Louisville because of the injury sustained by Kevin Ware, who had been providing valuable minutes off the bench.

Ware broke his leg in the regional finals against Duke.

The Wolverines were in better shape, with only forward Mitch McGary in foul trouble. The big forward picked up his fourth with 9:11 left in the game.

? Dave Skretta

___

HOT SHOOTING

So much for that theory about poor shooting in domes.

Michigan and Louisville aren't having any trouble. The teams combined to start the second half 5 of 6 from the field.

The Wolverines took a 38-37 lead into halftime Monday night thanks in part to shooting 50 percent from the field, and 6 of 11 from beyond the arc. Spike Albrecht helped, of course, with his 6-for-7 half and by going 4 for 4 from deep.

The Cardinals aren't doing shabby, either. They were hitting at a 46-percent clip and were 5 of 8 from beyond the arc, led by a 4-for-4 effort from Luke Hancock.

There's long been a belief that shooting in domes is more difficult because depth perception is thrown off by the spacious surroundings. That hasn't been the case tonight.

? Dave Skretta ? http://twitter.com/@APdaveskretta

___

HALFTIME ? MICHIGAN LEADING

It's halftime at the national championship game and Michigan is 20 minutes away from only its second national championship.

Freshman Spike Albrecht is the surprise scoring leader with 17 points as Michigan leads Louisville 38-37 at halftime of Monday night's championship game. Michigan won its only title in 1989.

Michigan, the No. 4 seed, is trying to upset Louisville, the No. 1 seed. Luke Hancock has 16 points for Louisville, which made a late charge to lead 37-36 before Michigan's Glenn Robinson III sank two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining.

Michigan star Trey Burke scored the first five points on a jumper and 3-pointer and had seven points less than 3 minutes into the game, matching his total from the Wolverines' semifinal win over Syracuse.

? Charles Odum ? http://twitter.com/CharlesOdum

___

GETTING SPIKED!

Louisville is getting Spiked in the NCAA finals.

As in, Spike Albrecht.

The freshman guard for Michigan has nearly outscored the Cardinals by himself ? he had 17 points as the Wolverines raced to a 33-21 lead late in the first half.

Albrecht was 4 for 4 from beyond the arc, running his NCAA tournament to 9 for 9 and matching Sam Cassell of Florida State (1993) for the most 3-pointers without a miss in tourney history.

Albrecht came into the game averaging about 2 points, with nine made 3s all season. His season high had been just seven points.

Late in the half, he got the ball on the wing and pumped faked from beyond the arc, not only bringing his defender off his feet but also about 50,000 fans. Albrecht wisely passed the ball away, but got it back moments later and converted on a nifty driving layup.

He furiously punched the air as Louisville called timeout.

___

WEBBER SIGHTING

Former five-time NBA All-Star Chris Webber showed up at the Georgia Dome just about the time Michigan's starting lineup was being introduced before the Wolverines squared off against Louisville in Monday's night's national championship game.

CBS-TV showed Webber arriving at the Georgia Dome and exiting his car minutes before the game. He was wearing a UM hat.

Webber played on Michigan's 1992 and 1993 Final Four teams but a federal investigation revealed that a booster gave Webber and three non-Fab Five players more than $600,000 while they were student-athletes. The NCAA forced the school to dissociate from them until this year. The dissociation officially ends in May.

? Charles Odum

___

CLEAN PLAY

There haven't been many whistles blown early on in the championship game.

That's a good thing, too.

After a season in which basketball often resembled wrestling, and in which officials often stole the headlines, it was Michigan and Louisville on center stage at the Georgia Dome.

Only two fouls had been called in the first 7 minutes, 11 seconds, as the teams got into an up-and-down affair that finally looked the way basketball was meant to be played.

Both teams were shooting it well, too. Michigan started off 7 of 11 from the field, while Louisville was 5 for 11 as the second media timeout neared.

? Dave Skretta

___

VENUS WILLAMS

Venus Williams' pick is looking pretty good.

The tennis star is using her mother's home state as a good reason to cheer for Michigan against Louisville. The Wolverines are up 38-37 at the half.

Williams said she hasn't watched much of the NCAA tournament but is pulling for Michigan because her mother was born in Saginaw, Mich.

"I'm going with her hometown," Williams said before the game. She is in Atlanta on Monday to promote her athletic clothing line, EleVen.

___

SANDY HOOK

Police Chief Michael Kehoe and some of the other officers from Newton, Conn., who responded to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School were honored during a timeout in the first half at the Final Four.

The crowd erupted when the officers, dressed in their uniforms, were shown on the video board hanging over the court and on the screens at each end of the Georgia Dome.

Twenty children and six adults were killed in the shooting last December.

? Dave Skretta

___

WARE CHEERS

Injured Louisville guard Kevin Ware followed his same pregame routine as in the Cardinals' semifinal win over Wichita State.

Ware, on crutches after having surgery to repair his broken right leg, again was cheered when he took his seat by the Louisville bench. Wearing his white No. 5 jersey, Ware sat beside the elevated court, facing the action, where he could prop up his injured leg on another chair. He stood at the end of Saturday's semifinal win over Wichita State and even shocked his teammates by joining a late-game huddle.

His teammates again wore T-shirts over their jerseys in pregame warmups with the words "Ri5e to the Occasion." A fan raised a sign which read "Rise for 5."

Ware played at Rockdale County High School, about 30 miles east of Atlanta.

___

MICHIGAN's HOMECOURT

Michigan ought to have a homecourt advantage over Louisville on Monday night.

The maple floor that the teams are playing on in the Georgia Dome was made by Connor Sport Court International at its plant in Amasa, Mich., and the lumber for it came from Timber Products Company, which is based in Munising, Mich.

The court is made up of 4-by-7 foot pieces that were sent by truck to Atlanta, where they were fitted together on an elevated platform in time for the Final Four.

Connor Sport Court also made the court for the women's Final Four in New Orleans.

___

MAYWEATHER'S PICK

Floyd Mayweather Jr. won't know until halftime which team he'll pick to win the national basketball championship.

Once the undefeated boxing champion figures it out, he is expecting to place a $50,000 bet toward either Michigan or Louisville in the NCAA title game on Monday night. He thinks the Wolverines have a strong chance to come away with the crown if they're able to sustain an early lead against the Cardinals.gg

"I think that if Michigan gets a lead like that, it's going to be kind of hard to come back," said Mayweather, who is an avid sports fan and often bets on games. He probably should wait as long as he can: He had Indiana winning it all in his bracket.

Mayweather was in Atlanta to promote his upcoming fight against Robert Guerrero on May 4 in Las Vegas.

? Jonathan Landrum

___

TRAVIS TRITT

Country musician Travis Tritt has quite the task ahead of him when he performs the national anthem prior to Monday night's national championship between Michigan and Louisville.

The Georgia native will be following a virtuoso performance by the Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir before Saturday night's national semifinals, a rendition that drew almost universal praise from fans, the media and across social media platforms.

Tritt is no stranger to big sporting events. The two-time Grammy Award-winner has performed at two Super Bowls, a World Series and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and will be performing for the 15th time during Kentucky Derby festivities next month in Louisville, Ky.

? Dave Skretta

___

TICKET PRICES

Fans waiting until the last minute to buy NCAA championship game tickets are paying a steep price.

The average price for Monday night's game had soared to $720, according to TiqIQ.com, which tracks ticket trends. The company says that is a 140-percent increase over last year's final between Kentucky and Kansas in New Orleans.

At Ticketstub.com, prices for Monday night's game were starting at $330 about three hours before the game.

___

MICHIGAN'S FAB FIVE

One unanswered question at the Final Four: Will there be a reunion of Michigan's Fab Five?

Twenty years ago, the brash group of Michigan youngsters lost to North Carolina in the NCAA title game. This is Michigan's first trip back to the championship game.

Chris Webber's whereabouts are causing the most commotion. Jalen Rose went on a Grantland.com podcast and encouraged Webber to join him and other Fab Five players at Monday night's title game against Louisville, but it's not clear whether that will happen.

Michigan has been recovering from the fallout after a federal investigation revealed that a booster gave Webber and three non-Fab Five players more than $600,000 while they were student-athletes. The NCAA forced the school to dissociate from them until this year. The dissociation officially ends in May.

On Saturday, Webber tweeted "It's Your Time Now!" ? along with a picture of current Michigan players Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III.

HAIL TO THE VICTORS

Michigan coach John Beilein attended the Final Four in 1989, when the Wolverines last won a national championship, and remembers one thing sticking out in his mind:

"Hail! to the victors valiant

Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes

Hail! Hail! to Michigan

The leaders and best!"

"I heard 'The Victors.' I heard the best fight song in the world," said Beilein, who was then a coach at Division II Le Moyne, and was attending the Final Four in Seattle with his wife, Kathleen.

"Kathleen and I looked at each other and said, 'This is the best fight song I have ever heard," Beilein recalled this week. "That's why it's so eerie to hear it today, that it ended up being my destination."

ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2013

Many security vendors offer a three-tier product line: standalone antivirus, security suite, and mega-suite. Bonus features in a mega-suite can include backup, tune-up, password management, encryption, and more. ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2013 ($89.95 direct for three licenses) occupies the mega-suite slot in Check Point's product line, but it's woefully lacking compared to the competition and even compared to its own 2012 edition.

This product's main window is identical to that of the base-level ZoneAlarm suite. The only visible difference is that the Tune-up link is no longer disabled.

Limited Features
The product comparison chart on the ZoneAlarm website indicates that ZoneAlarm Extreme offers PC Tune-up and keylogger protection, features not found in ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2013. However, keylogger protection isn't entirely ready. My Check Point contact explained that the company is "transitioning to a new homegrown keylogger technology that has less conflicts with third party software," and that at present keylogger protection is handles by the behavioral detection component.

Last year's version included a license for ZoneAlarm DataLock, a whole-disk encryption product, but that product is "being phased out." A new File and Folder lock product replaces it. However, that product it's not yet integrated into ZoneAlarm Extreme.

"ForceField" virtualization technology was a big part of the first ZoneAlarm Extreme. This technology worked to protect the browser from drive-by downloads and prevent any Web-based malware from making damaging changes to the system. A glowing browser window border served as a reminder of its protection. And... ForceField is out. "It was a support and development nightmare," my Check Point contact said. "A more compatible replacement technology [is] in the works, but [we] are still in the awkward transition phase."

Limited Tune-Up
The Tune-Up feature isn't installed along with the rest of ZoneAlarm Extreme, but the first time you try to run it, you're directed to a Web page that lets you download and activate it. I smelled a rat at this very first step. Yes, it offered a button to let me install now, but another button proposed that I "Update Now" for $9.95. The extra $10 you pay for ZoneAlarm Extreme gets nothing but this feature; now they want another $10?

It turns out ZoneAlarm's PC Tune-Up is a stripped-down and re-branded version of a tool from Large Software. This version focuses specifically on the Registry, omitting features like management of startup programs, scheduling, and getting rid of useless files.

When you launch the Tune-Up component it goes through four stages of Registry cleanup. It backs up the Registry, scans for problems, fixes found problems, and finally defragments the Registry. Expert users can pick and choose which problems to fix; most users will just fix everything. On the off-chance that a "fix" breaks something, you can revert to the backup created in the first step.

I ran a Tune-Up on my physical test system, running Windows 7. I hit a snag at the very first step, as the utility reported numerous errors backing up the Registry. After I clicked the error messages away, though, it reported that the backup completed successfully. It found and fixed hundreds of Registry problems and proceeded to defragment the Registry, after which I had to reboot.

Once I rebooted, I ran the Tune-Up again... and discovered that it had done nothing the first time around. It still displayed error messages during backup, still found and allegedly fixed the same problems, and still found the Registry in need of defragmentation. After a third run-through, for a sanity check, I contacted tech support.

They suggested I launch the Tune-Up application by right-clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator." That didn't make a lot of sense, given that I was using an Administrator account, but I gave it a try. This time it worked. I wonder how many ordinary users will run Tune-Up over and over, not realizing that it isn't doing anything?

Final chapter to 60-year-old blood group mystery

Apr. 7, 2013 ? Researchers have solved a 60-year-old mystery by identifying a gene that can cause rejection, kidney failure and even death in some blood transfusion patients. In this study, published in Nature Genetics online 07 April, they identified the gene that underlies the Vel blood group and will lead to the development of more reliable blood tests and reduce the risk for transfusion patients who lack this blood group.

Researchers have uncovered the gene at the root of a human blood group that has remained a mystery for the past 60 years. They showed that a genetic deletion on this gene is responsible for the lack of this blood group in some people.

With the discovery of the gene behind the Vel blood group, medical scientists can now develop a more reliable DNA test to identify people who lack this group. This will reduce the risk of severe, and sometimes life threatening, destruction of the Vel-positive donor red blood cells in patients with antibodies against Vel.

The genetic basis of nearly all 34 blood group systems has been resolved over the past century, but identification of the underlying gene of the Vel blood group has withstood persistent attempts since it was first identified 60 years ago. It is estimated that one in 5000 people are Vel-negative, and routine blood transfusions for patients with antibodies against Vel can lead to kidney failure and even death.

The discovery by the team would not have been possible without the colleagues from the blood transfusion services of Denmark, England and the Netherlands who undertook the Herculean effort of identifying the 65 individuals that lacked the Vel blood group by testing the red blood cells from nearly 350,000 donors with antibodies against Vel.

They then sequenced the coding fraction of the genomes of five donors who lack the Vel group to identify the underlying gene.

The team showed that the gene SMIM1 malfunctions in Vel-negative people. SMIM1 is found on chromosome 1 and specifies a small protein, five times smaller than the average human protein. This provides a direct explanation why a discovery by other routes has proven so challenging.

"It has been a remarkable feat to go from gene discovery to function in less than two months," continues Professor Ouwehand.

Current testing for Vel-negative people can be inaccurate but identifying this new role for the gene will make it easier to identify people who lack Vel. The Sanquin Blood Supply research laboratories in Amsterdam and the NHS Blood and Transplant Centre in Cambridge are currently working together to develop a new and affordable DNA test to efficiently identify people who lack the Vel group.

"We already knew of 75 genomic regions that are associated with the haemoglobin levels and other red blood cell traits, but we quickly realised that the SMIM1 gene identified in our study is the same as one of these associated regions," said Dr Pim van der Harst from Groningen University in the Netherlands who led the GWAS analysis for red cell traits in nearly 100,000 individuals. "We had already assumed that a gene in this region of chromosome 1 played a role in the life of red blood cells, but we now have conclusive evidence that it is SMIM1.

"We have shown that this gene controls a protein in the membrane of red blood cells. Switching off the SMIM1 gene in zebrafish showed a remarkable reduction in the number of red cells formed and caused anemia in the fish."

The team observed that the common variant identified by the red blood cell study has a strong effect on how well the SMIM1 gene functions. This not only explains why the level of the Vel blood group varies so extensively in the population, but is also makes it extremely plausible that the Smim1 protein influences haemoglobin levels of red blood cells.

A low haemoglobin level confers a risk of anemia, which is one of the most frequent reasons for an individual to visit their doctor. The team are pursuing further research to deduce how Smim1 protein regulates red blood cell formation.

"As the molecular machinery underlying red blood cell formation has been researched for decades in fish, mice and man, our discovery that a gene which was considered hypothetical until recently actually controls a red blood cell membrane protein with an important role in the regulation of haemoglobin levels is astonishing," says Professor Ellen van der Schoot from the Sanquin research laboratories in Amsterdam. "A better understanding of how the SMIM1 gene is regulated is important and this effort will greatly benefit from the Blueprint project which will be releasing its results on the biology of blood cells and their precursors this year"

"We have worked for nearly a decade to identify the donors across England that lack the Vel blood group so that we can provide matched and safe blood to patients with antibodies against Vel" says Mr Malcolm Needs from NHS Blood and Transplant in Tooting, London. "The discovery of the SMIM1 gene was achieved so quickly and it is truly amazing to see how medical genomics is changing the care landscape for NHS patients."

Pa. inmate denies hiding phone in prosthetic leg

(AP) ? A former Pennsylvania jail inmate says he didn't sneak a cellphone into the lockup in his prosthetic leg, though he acknowledged having it for a year as he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

Instead, 28-year-old Christopher Greer, of Uniontown, tells a judge the phone was in his cargo shorts when he reported in 2011 to serve a sentence for driving on a suspended license.

Greer says he kept the phone because inmates at the Fayette County lockup 40 miles south of Pittsburgh must pay $4 per call.

Greer pleaded guilty Tuesday, but the warden doesn't believe Greer smuggled the phone in either his pocket or his leg, as county detectives charged. Brian Miller says both would have been searched too thoroughly for that.

Microsoft Outlook to Windows RT rescue?

Adding Microsoft Outlook to RT devices like Microsoft's Surface certainly won't hurt the platform.

Adding Microsoft Outlook to RT devices like Microsoft's Surface certainly won't hurt the platform.

(Credit: CNET)

A fresh rumor out today holds that Microsoft Outlook is coming to Windows RT.

The popular e-mail application is conspicuously absent on Windows RT devices. That is, RT devices -- which run a limited version of Windows 8 on the ARM chip platform -- come with Microsoft Office sans Outlook.

Today there's word that Outlook has been seen running on Surface RT tablets.

And that's not all. SuperSite for Windows claims that an ARM-related firmware issue was causing Outlook to crash. Possibly offering at least one reason for its exclusion until now.

Adding Outlook certainly wouldn't hurt, said Craig Stice, an analyst at IHS iSuppli. "Consumers can find this frustrating. They think they're getting a Windows 8 system but there's no Outlook," he said.

And that's a larger ongoing problem for RT. "They don't know what they're getting into when they buy an RT device," he said. Consumers buy an RT device because it's less expensive than a full-blown Windows 8 system but miss the fact that it's incompatible with older "legacy" Windows software, Stice explained.

Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, whose ARM chip powers the Microsoft Surface RT tablet, said in no uncertain terms last month that Outlook is necessary for RT's success. "Outlook god, please," Huang said at that time, pleading for Microsoft to add Outlook.

(Note that RT products come preloaded with Word 2013 RT, Excel 2013 RT, PowerPoint 2013 RT and OneNote 2013 RT.)

Walking can lower risk of heart-related conditions as much as running

Apr. 4, 2013 ? Walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as running can, according to surprising findings reported in the American Heart Association journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

Researchers analyzed 33,060 runners in the National Runners' Health Study and 15,045 walkers in the National Walkers' Health Study. They found that the same energy used for moderate intensity walking and vigorous intensity running resulted in similar reductions in risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and possibly coronary heart disease over the study's six years.

"Walking and running provide an ideal test of the health benefits of moderate-intensity walking and vigorous-intensity running because they involve the same muscle groups and the same activities performed at different intensities," said Paul T. Williams, Ph.D., the study's principal author and staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Life Science Division in Berkeley, Calif.

Unlike previous studies, the researchers assessed walking and running expenditure by distance, not by time. Participants provided activity data by responding to questionnaires.

"The more the runners ran and the walkers walked, the better off they were in health benefits. If the amount of energy expended was the same between the two groups, then the health benefits were comparable," Williams said.

Comparing energy expenditure to self-reported, physician-diagnosed incident hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and coronary heart disease, researchers found:

  • Running significantly reduced risk for first-time hypertension 4.2 percent and walking reduced risk 7.2 percent.
  • Running reduced first-time high cholesterol 4.3 percent and walking 7 percent.
  • Running reduced first-time diabetes 12.1 percent compared to 12.3 percent for walking.
  • Running reduced coronary heart disease 4.5 percent compared to 9.3 percent for walking.

"Walking may be a more sustainable activity for some people when compared to running, however, those who choose running end up exercising twice as much as those that choose walking. This is probably because they can do twice as much in an hour," Williams said.

Study participants were 18 to 80 years old, clustered in their 40s and 50s. Men represented 21 percent of the walkers and 51.4 percent of the runners.

"People are always looking for an excuse not to exercise, but now they have a straightforward choice to run or to walk and invest in their future health," Williams said.

Co-author is Paul D. Thompson, M.D.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute funded the study.

Civil servants' strike signals start of guerrilla war, says union

Civil servants in Bristol join public sector in national strike

Tens of thousands of civil servants, including staff in jobcentres, courts and driving test offices, staged a half-day strike on Friday afternoon in what the head of their union said was likely to be the start of a "guerrilla war" of intermittent industrial action.

Members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) started walking out from 1pm, also affecting Whitehall offices, government agencies and museums, in a dispute over pay and conditions.

Mark Serwotka, the PCS general secretary, said the dispute was primarily about pay restraint, job cuts and changes to pension contributions and employment conditions, but the specific trigger was what he claimed was the government's reluctance to talk about the issues.

"In that perfect storm for us, the overarching grievance that has really forced our hand is that they have refused to sit down and talk about any of it," he said.

"If we were in a dialogue, we wouldn't be taking any action. The problem is there's no dialogue and their attacks are happening. Faced with that, we concluded that doing nothing wasn't an option."

The union was being told, Serwotka said, that any talks would have to be with the heads of specific departments and agencies, who had no power to change anything. "They're not talks at all. They're just about how they're going to implement things we profoundly disagree with. Our argument is that there must be negotiation at the centre, where the decisions are made," he said.

Planned action at the Home Office and UK Border Agency was rescheduled after staff were told they would lose a day's pay for even a half-day walkout.

Such tactics, Serwotka said, were likely to inflame tensions: "I think you're going to see a real guerrilla war going on over the next few months, where we will target ministers visiting workplaces with demonstrations, we'll have short walkouts that are meant to be disruptive as well as broader campaigning work with other unions."

Addressing a rally outside the Cabinet Office in London, Serwotka announced a week of strikes at the Home Office from 15 April, with different groups of workers taking action at different times.

The decision to begin strikes was made last month after a 61% vote in favour by members, with a turnout of 28%.

Serwotka said the dispute was as bad as any he could remember "I don't think we've ever been in such a difficult situation. That's bad enough if they talk to you about it. But if they sit in their bunker, it requires a different pace of opposition," he said.

This week, the country's biggest trade union, Unite, raised the notion of a 24-hour general strike against wider government austerity measures, which unions argue unfairly target poorer people and are causing the economy to stagnate.

Serwotka said that while the PCS shared worries about austerity, the half-day strike was more specific. "This is a dispute with the government only in the sense of it being the employer," he said.

The Cabinet Office minister, Francis Maude, said the action was "futile, counterproductive and irresponsible".

"It benefits no one, but threatens the services people rely on, at a time when we should all be working together to support growth and build the economy," he said. "I can reassure the public that the government is doing everything we can to minimise disruption. Rigorous contingency plans are in place to limit the impact of the strike action and to ensure that affected public services operate as effectively as possible."

HIV self-testing: The key to controlling the global epidemic

Apr. 2, 2013 ? A new international study has confirmed that self-testing for HIV is effective and could be the answer to controlling the global epidemic. This major systematic review, led by the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), shows HIV self-testing removes much of the fear and stigma associated with being tested for the disease.

This study, which is published in PLoS Medicine is the first of its kind and could pave the way for early detection and treatment around the world, thereby reducing transmission.

"Thirty years into the HIV* epidemic, there is no vaccine in sight. Treatment as a prevention strategy has been known to work, but uptake of HIV screening seems to be limited by a societal problem: HIV stigma and perceived discrimination," says Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, who is the first and corresponding author of the study, a clinical researcher at the RI-MUHC and assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University.

According to UNAIDS*, 50 per cent of people living with HIV worldwide are unaware of their HIV status and about 2.5 million people become infected every year. Dr. Pant Pai firmly believes that access to an HIV self-test linked to expedited counselling systems will help expand access to screening and reduce judgement and perceived attitudes around HIV testing. Self-tests are performed in oral fluid samples from the gum lining of the mouth in the privacy of one's home. They are non-invasive, convenient, ensure confidentiality and can provide results within 20 minutes. The results are self-interpreted however, and require confirmation at a medical clinic if positive.

There is a lot of global momentum in favour of HIV self-testing with several countries and health networks advocating their use. Several studies have been conducted to determine the best methods of making a self-test with linked counselling and referral services available in various African, North American and European settings. Dr. Pant Pai and her colleagues decided to look at the global evidence on self-testing strategies based on acceptability, feasibility and accuracy and success with linkages to care.

They examined 21 worldwide studies and found that two distinct self-testing strategies have been tried: supervised self-testing (self-testing and counselling aided by a health-care professional), and unsupervised self-testing (self-testing performed without any help but with counselling available by phone or internet). Most of the data came from studies carried out in high-income settings including the United States, Canada, Spain and the Netherlands, as well as Kenya, Singapore, Malawi and India.

Across the various studies, researchers observed that acceptability (defined as the number of people who self-tested divided by the number who consented to self-test) was very high for both self-testing strategies. They also found evidence that people preferred self-testing to facility-based testing and oral self-testing to blood-based self-testing. "The preference was largely driven by the fact the oral self-tests are non-invasive, convenient, easy to swab and do not involve a finger stick or blood from your arm for a preliminary screen," explains Dr. Pant Pai. "A lot of people also wanted to take the oral self-test home to test their partners."

Dr. Pant Pai's project is supported by a Stars in Global Health award from Grand Challenges Canada, which is funded by the Government of Canada. "Canada has a deep pool of talent dedicated to pursuing bold ideas that can have big impact in the developing world," adds Dr. Peter A. Singer, CEO of Grand Challenges Canada. "Grand Challenges Canada is proud to support innovators like Dr. Pant Pai because they will make a difference to many lives."

Dr. Pant Pai and colleagues urge policy makers everywhere to look at the proven results of supervised and unsupervised self-testing, and think how best to put these strategies into practice in their own countries. "We have, as a society, made great progress with biomedical tools, drugs and strategies, but we haven't conquered HIV-related stigma and perceived discrimination. The time is now right to tailor strategies to suit the preferences and lifestyles of patients with a view to expand access."

UN puts human rights at heart of historic Arms Trade Treaty ...

In a historic move, with the culmination of more than 20 years of campaigning by organisations including Amnesty International, governments at the United Nations have adopted an Arms Trade Treaty.

The Treaty will prohibit states from transferring weapons to countries when they know those weapons will be used to commit genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes.

In the UN General Assembly, 154 states voted to adopt the treaty just days after Iran, North Korea and Syria ? three human rights-abusing countries under some form of UN sanctions ? tried to block it.

All three voted against the treaty and 23 other states abstained.

?The world has been waiting a long time for this historic treaty. After long years of campaigning, most states have agreed to adopt a global treaty that can prevent the flow of arms into countries where they will be used to commit atrocities,? said Brian Wood, Head of Arms Control and Human Rights at Amnesty International, from the UN conference in New York.

?Despite Iran, North Korea and Syria?s deeply cynical attempt to stymie it, the overwhelming majority of the world?s nations have shown resounding support for this lifesaving treaty with human rights protection at its core.?

The treaty also obligates all governments to assess the risk of transferring arms, ammunition or components to another country where they could be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

Where that overriding risk is real and cannot be mitigated, states have agreed the transfer will not go forward.

?When you think of the huge economic interest and the political power in play for the big arms producers and exporters, this treaty is a tribute to both civil society, who championed the idea to save lives and reduce human suffering, as well as the governments who heeded that call,? said Widney Brown, Senior Director of International Law and Policy at Amnesty International.

?In the next four years, the annual trade in conventional weapons, ammunition and components and parts will exceed $100 billion. But today, states have put human beings and their security first.?

The Amnesty International human rights movement was instrumental in civil society and Nobel Peace Laureate efforts since the early 1990s to achieve robust, legally binding global rules on international arms transfers to stem the flow of arms that fuel atrocities and abuse.

The treaty was adopted after more than six years of UN deliberations ? a process that began in December 2006 when the General Assembly agreed to consult all states on the feasibility, scope and parameters of a treaty to regulate the international transfer of conventional arms.

A record number of states responded to the UN Secretary General, almost all of them positively. Human rights and humanitarian law were put at the top of the list of criteria.

The scope in the adopted treaty covers major categories of conventional arms, including small arms and light weapons which proliferate in countries with low-level conflicts, armed violence and a massive number of civilian casualties.

?As in all treaty negotiations, we did not get everything that we wanted, including ammunition not being included in all the treaty provisions, but since this treaty can be amended and has many strong rules it provides a firm foundation on which to build an international system to curb the flow of arms to those who would commit atrocities,? said Wood.

?This shows that when members of the public come up with a really good idea that will help make the world better and get organized, they really can make it happen and make a difference on a global scale.?

The treaty will be opened for signatures and ratification on 3 June 2013 at the UN General Assembly and will enter into force shortly after it has been ratified by 50 states.

Man Charged in Fatal Road Rage Accident - Chicago Personal ...

April 3rd, 2013

Greg Puglise, a 63-year-old Vietnam veteran, was riding home on his motorcycle when he was struck and killed by a crazed driver.

Michael Moreno, 32, had become engaged in a road rage incident with three young people after he was cut off by a 16-year-old driver. The drivers pulled over and exchanged heated words . Moreno chased after the teenagers and drove his Infiniti sedan into Puglise?s path at River Road and Ogden Avenue. Unable to stop in time, Puglise struck Moreno?s car.

Prosecutors stated that Moreno was experiencing road rage after the collision, and that he only paused briefly after colliding with Puglise before continuing after the other vehicle. Police reported that Moreno did not even get out of his car after the crash with Puglise. Moreno reportedly told police that a blue car was responsible for the collision, and drove off after the teenagers that enraged him, leaving Puglise and his mangled motorcycle for dead.

Police followed Moreno to a parking lot, where Moreno and the teens in the other car had stopped. Moreno kept yelling at the teenagers until police restrained him and he was arrested. Additional charges were later filed after blood tests indicated Moreno had marijuana and cocaine in his system. Moreno faces charges of aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

U.S. deploys second warship to North Korea

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military is deploying a second guided-missile destroyer to the Asia-Pacific region, U.S. officials said on Tuesday, as fears mount over North Korea's threats of war.

The United States is walking a difficult line, trying to avoid escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula while also taking steps to reassure allies in Seoul and Tokyo of American military capabilities to respond to any moves by Pyongyang.

U.S. defense officials announced on Monday that the USS John McCain, an Aegis-class guided-missile destroyer used for ballistic missile defense, was being put into position to operate off the Korean peninsula.

U.S. officials confirmed to Reuters on Tuesday that another destroyer, the USS Decatur, was en route toward the region to provide ballistic missile defense options. No further details were given.

The officials denied reports that a floating, X-band radar was being deployed to the waters off Japan, saying no decisions had been made about what would be done with the radar once at-sea testing in the region was finished. The radar is used to track an adversary's missiles as part of a missile defense system.

News of the latest U.S. move to bolster missile defenses around the Korean peninsula came as North Korea said on Tuesday it would revive a mothballed nuclear reactor able to produce bomb-grade plutonium.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the crisis over North Korea had gone too far and he appealed for discussion and negotiation. "Nuclear threats are not a game. Aggressive rhetoric and military posturing only result in counter-actions, and fuel fear and instability," Ban, a South Korean, told a news conference during a visit to Andorra.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan isn't going to be a mother, yet.

The actress confirmed Tuesday morning that a cryptic late-night Twitter posting hours earlier that stated she was pregnant was an April Fools' Day prank.

The "Liz & Dick" star's proclamation that she was expecting a child caused a frenzy on social media, and several entertainment news outlets reported the tweet while raising the possibility it was a prank.

On Tuesday morning Lohan deleted the tweet and wrote that she was having some fun. The actress wrote, "Where's everyone's sense of humor?"

Calls to Lohan's attorney Mark Jay Heller and her publicist were not returned.

The 26-year-old has until May to enroll in a lockdown rehab to satisfy her sentence in a reckless driving and lying to police case.
