Police: MC Hammer pulled over for expired tags

DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) ? A sheriff's department spokesman in Northern California says a Dublin police officer stopped and then arrested MC Hammer because the '90s rap star was driving a car with expired registration and refused to get out of the vehicle.

Lt. Herb Walters of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said in a statement issued Monday that Hammer was "very argumentative" with the officer during the traffic stop late Thursday. He says it's unclear who owns the car.

Hammer eventually came out of the car and was arrested for investigation of obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties.

Hammer, who was born Stanley Burrell, has offered a different account, suggesting he was the victim of racial profiling. He tweeted on Saturday that the officer asked him if he were on parole or probation and tried to pull him out through the car window.

Jesse Jackson Jr. Guilty Plea: Ex-Congressman And Wife To Plead Guilty To Federal Fraud Charges

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Former Chicago congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., son of the famed civil rights leader, plans to plead guilty to charges filed on Friday accusing him of misusing $750,000 in campaign funds, his attorney said.
Jackson's wife, Sandi Jackson, has also agreed to plead guilty to a related charge of filing false tax returns, according to her attorneys. She resigned her seat on the Chicago city council last month.
Both Jacksons, once considered one of the most powerful couples in the city, issued statements accepting responsibility.
"I offer no excuses for my conduct and I fully accept my responsibility for the improper decisions and mistakes I have made," said Jesse Jackson Jr, a Democrat, in his statement. He faces fraud and conspiracy charges.
Jackson's wife said in a statement that she was "deeply sorry" for her actions.
Once considered one of the most promising black politicians in the United States, Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned his congressional seat on Nov. 21 for health reasons, acknowledging at the time that he was under investigation by the FBI.
Jackson was once talked about as having the potential to become the first black president, noted Andy Shaw, president and CEO of the Chicago-based Better Government Association.
"Instead of heading for the White House, he is heading for the big house, and that is an enormous fall from grace," Shaw said in a radio interview on WBBM-AM.
Jackson's father, a former presidential candidate, was not immediately available for comment.
Prosecutors said at least seven people were involved in the scheme to divert campaign funds to personal uses.
Among the accusations is that Jesse Jackson, Jr. shipped a $43,350 men's Rolex watch purchased with campaign funds to his D.C. address. He also shipped fur capes and parkas purchased with $5,150 in campaign funds to the Beverly Hills home of an unnamed person, the documents said.
As part of the case, the government said Jackson must forfeit tens of thousands of dollars in celebrity memorabilia derived from the alleged crimes, including a $4,600 fedora that once belonged to late pop star Michael Jackson.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, if convicted, Jackson faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and his wife three years, but defendants who accept responsibility are typically sentenced to much less than the maximum term.

JACKSON'S ABSENCE
Jackson disappeared from public view early in the summer of 2012 and speculation swirled for weeks about his condition. He said in late June he had taken a leave of absence two weeks earlier for treatment of what was then described as exhaustion.
Jackson issued a statement in early July saying his health problems were more serious and he needed extended in-patient treatment for unspecified "physical and emotional ailments."
Days later, his physician said the congressman was receiving intensive care for a "mood disorder" and was expected to make a full recovery. The Mayo Clinic announced in late July that Jackson had been admitted.
He was treated for at least six weeks at Mayo for bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression, which is marked by highs and lows of mood and can be treated by medication and psychological counseling.
Representative Danny Davis, another Chicago Democrat, said he believed the alleged offenses were related to the disorder, the symptoms of which can include reckless behavior, such as spending sprees.
"It's kind of beyond one's imagination," Davis told Reuters. "A $5,000 football - that's kind of bizarre. It's so sad and so unfortunate."
Jackson made it to Congress in 1995 after winning a special election triggered by the resignation of Representative Mel Reynolds, who was convicted of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. Reynolds is now vying for the seat again in a Feb. 26 Democratic primary.
Jackson was a reliable liberal vote during his 17-year House career, supporting increases in the minimum wage, the expansion of environmental regulations and gay rights and, in 2008, the bailout of the teetering U.S. financial system.
He was also an early advocate of a strict timeline for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. He was easily re-elected in November 2012, despite his absence from the district. His resignation came two weeks after the election.
In addition to the federal investigation of his campaign finances, Jackson had been the subject of a House ethics committee probe over an alleged bribe offered by a Jackson supporter in 2008 to then-Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.
The bribe was said to be intended to entice Blagojevich to appoint Jackson to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama. Jackson has admitted to lobbying for the seat, but denied knowing about any money offered to Blagojevich, who has since been convicted of corruption and imprisoned. Whether you decide to landscape your yard, put in a pool, paint your home inside and out, or are planning an addition, you need to weigh your options and consider why you are taking on the project. If you are doing the improvements to a home that you plan on living in for the long haul, then your dollar is being spent on your own personal satisfaction. However, if you are looking to increase the value or curb appeal of your home, you need to be careful to ensure that you are going to get your money back. Many home improvements turn out to be a waste of time and money that do little to improve your home?s value; however, they may just set your home apart in the eyes of a perspective buyer. So, before digging a giant hole in your yard for that pool, be sure to do your homework, and then decide if it is all worth it.

Swimming pools and outdoor living areas are a sexy addition to your home. We dream about those hot Texas days spent sipping margaritas poolside, while our friends splash around in the pool. You might just become the coolest of all your friends during the hottest August days; but, before you go buying those water weenies, consider the costs. Let?s start with the installing of the pool itself. The average price of an inground pool is $22,000, and can easily hit the $50K mark if you get carried away. While a pool may be attractive to potential buyers, it can also scare them away. Families with young children may not want to take on the safety hazards that a pool can bring. Plus, you will never get back what you spent installing the pool. Another drawback to owning a pool is the maintenance and costs associated with it. You also should be aware of the replacement of any parts and the repairing of any cracks that will inevitably form. Again, this can be appealing to buyers, or be a great place to hang out almost year round in DFW. There are many options and price ranges you can go with. Built in barbeques, sinks, ovens, decking, fire pits, entertainment centers, and furniture can make this space a popular place on a variety of budgets. So, if you are planning on enjoying this all for yourselves, the by all means, go nuts. However do not expect to see all that money in return when you choose to sell.

If you are thinking of some indoor improvements, like a kitchen remodel, for example, consider the current condition. If your cabinetry is tattered and falling apart, your appliances are out of date, and your flooring is awful, then it may be an investment with a great return. If everything is still in pretty good shape, the adage, ?If it aint broke, don?t fix it? might be your best advice. The same goes for flooring and carpet throughout your home. Sometimes a good buffing or shampooing can bring new life to your floors.

One project that can really improve the look and value of your home is new paint. Painting the inside, outside, and even the front door can really put a new shine on a home?s old look. If you plan on selling anytime soon, it is a good idea to keep the colors neutral. Perspective buyers might be scared away by the blood red bathroom walls. Again, if you are doing this for yourselves, then go ahead and paint your hallway that baby-poop orange you?ve had your eye on! The good thing about painting is that it can be a relatively cheap project and is only semi-permanent.

Other cheap ways to make your aging home seem new involve some old fashioned elbow grease. A good weekend clean can add a sparkle that will last a long time. Pay special attention to tile, grout, and caulking in kitchens and bathrooms, and if needed, replace the grout or caulking in the problemed area. Having a garage sale and/or making a run to the dump is a great way to get rid of clutter and even reclaim some of your home?s square footage. Plus, it will prevent you from ending up on a reality show about hoarding. Replacing cabinet hardware is also easy, and can add a new look to your drawers and cabinets.

There are countless options and reasons for making over a home. They range from hundreds of dollars to tens-of-thousands of dollars. Some are do-it-yourself projects, while some require bringing in an expert. Whatever your flavor may be, do some research prior to jumping into a project, and carefully weigh the costs versus the rewards.

Canonical has announced that the Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones would be available from 21st February. Canonical announced Ubuntu OS for smartphones last month, and we brought you a demo of the Ubuntu OS running on the Galaxy Nexus from the International CES 2013. At CES Canonical said to us that they are in talks with several OEMs to launch a Ubuntu smartphone. Earlier this month Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth announced that the Ubunutu would be available devices as early as October 2013.

Ubuntu OS has radical user interface and offers completely new user experience. The Ubuntu Developer Preview would let the developers familiarize themselves with the new OS. Ubuntu smartphone OS has complete touch interface, unique lock screen, home screen with favorite apps, missed calls and customizable widgets, swipe gestures to cycle through list of apps and app recommendations. It also has notifications panel that lets you drag through the icons to view the settings.

Ubuntu code will deliver a mobile, tablet, desktop or TV experiences depending on the device it is installed on, or where it is docked. Ubuntu 13.10 (due in October) will include a complete entry-level smartphone experience.

They would also showcase range of devices running Ubuntu smartphone OS.

Vatican City, Feb 15, 2013 / 08:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- After meeting with Pope Benedict on Thursday, priests from the Rome diocese said they are sad he is retiring and that he was a great gift to the Church.

??We?re sad because a Pope is not only a theoretical leader, he?s the man to whom you give your allegiance and your vows, so there?s a direct link and a sadness in that,? said Father Robert, after the Pope met Feb. 14 with the clergy of his diocese at Paul VI Hall.

?It?s very sad because we?re losing a wonderful shepherd and a wonderful theologian, but he is also being realistic about the other acts of governance that he has to do,? Fr. Robert told CNA.

The priest, who is originally from South Africa, also praised the Pope?s intellectual contributions, calling him ?a giant in the Church.?

In keeping with his academic gifts, Pope Benedict spent his final meeting with the priests of his diocese sharing his thoughts about participating in Vatican II and how he understands it.

?He?s been a man who has had a wonderful influence in terms of the need to understand our faith,? he said.

Another priest, Paulist Father Francesco Cupello, said he has supported Pope Benedict for 35 years.

?I love this Pope very much, because I was his supporter since 1978, during the conclave when John Paul I and John Paul II were elected,? said Fr. Francesco of Rome?s Society of St. Paul.

?I was his supporter, so I was so happy when he was elected and very, very sad now,? he added.

The priest, who forms part of the order in charge of one of the world?s biggest Catholic publishing houses, said the Pope influenced him a lot in how he interprets the Second Vatican Council.

?I was very happy with his ?Summorum Pontificum? and when he restored the ancient liturgy, because he had a lot of courage to do this.?

Fr. Francesco said that this ?meant very much? and that it was ?a great gift to the whole Church.?

?It changed my life because I love ancient liturgy and now I celebrate it whenever I?ve the possibility,? he said.

A Tanzanian priest studying in Rome also said Pope Benedict has greatly influenced his priesthood and his life.

?His spiritual life has influenced me as a priest because he was a real father and indicated that you celebrate Mass with full attention, allowing people to participate fully in the liturgy and for them to recognize the coming of God in the consecration,? said Father Patrick Tibangayuka, who is studying for his PhD in philosophy.

?He has also influenced me in his spirit of listening,? said the African priest, who is originally from the Diocese of Bukoba.

?He would listen to everybody with an eye of respect and of reasoning and he would give clear answers, basing himself on the Church?s teachings, building himself on the Scripture and on tradition,? he added.

Fr. Tibangayuka said he was shocked when he heard about Pope Benedict?s resignation, but he thinks it was a ?courageous decision? and ?has shown great humility.?

?Yesterday at the (general) audience he said don?t be afraid because Jesus is there, so we are confident, and the other Pope who is coming will carry on the mission ? he will be a hard worker, a holy man and courageous as the Pope has been,? he said.

The Tanzanian priest called Pope Benedict?s lecture on the Second Vatican Council that took place yesterday ?interesting.?

?We have had a lecture of a real soul and I?m grateful we were able to participate,? said Fr. Tibangayuka.
