SFX Buys Readability Developer Arc90, Fame House and Tunezy To Boost Its Electronic And Live Dance Music Business

Electronic dance music is big business today, and today SFX Entertainment, a producer of live events and other electronic dance music content is making a big consolidation move to cement its position within it. It is buying three startupsArc90 (maker of the Readability app), marketing agency Fame House and music commerce platform Tunezy — to beef up its offerings online. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed; we’ll update if we can find out.

The string of deals follows the company’s acquisition of Beatport earlier this year.

The three companies and their teams are joining SFX to become the company’s platform team, with Arc90 founder Richard Ziade coming on as the company’s new chief product officer, he said in a blog post today.

“Arc90, Fame House and Tunezy are leaders in each of their fields and bring extraordinary talent to SFX,” said Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chairman and CEO of SFX Entertainment, in a statement. “These deals are consistent with our commitment to bring [electronic music culture] fans around the world more of what they love, 365-days-a-year, and to be world-class in all our areas of focus.”

Arc90′s possibly most visible product was Readability, which was an early project that also involved Marco Arment before he went on to start Instapaper. Arc90 has also worked with a number of clients to develop web and mobile apps behind the scenes, and that is how it was first introduced to SFX. Another Arc90 product was Kindling, a collaboration tool for businesses. With services like Instapaper and Flipboard taking off with consumers, it’s been hard for others to compete, and you can see how consolidating with a larger publisher might make sense for the company. Ziade says that both Kindling and Readability will continue to live as separate products, with an update for Readability coming soon.

As for Tunezy, the Canada-based startup had raised an undisclosed round with Interntainment Media. With platforms like Spotify and iTunes increasingly cornering the respective streaming and download markets, it’s hard for smaller music players to get a look in. Tunezy was built as a route for independent musicians to connect and sell music to fans, and it says it has some 10 million fans connected to artists that use its platform, but in a game of scale even this may have been too uphill a struggle.

This is where SFX may be able to come in handy. EDM (or EMC as SFX calls it) has largely bucked the trend in music today of diminishing returns on music sales. With a very heavy focus on paying for live events that revolve around star DJs, it’s become a huge money spinner — something that a recent article in the New Yorker pointed out is grossing even more than gambling at the casinos that have gone all-in on their EDM offerings.

There will be some of this coming through more in the digital space, it seems. “The DNA of Arc90 is to challenge convention and innovate,” said Arc90 CEO Rich Ziade.”We’re incredibly excited to contribute to the direction and stewardship of the digital experiences that will color so much of electronic music culture in the future. With SFX, we found a shared commitment to innovation and experimentation.”

The acquisitions are expected to close in November 2013.

Colts spoil Manning's return to Indianapolis

Los Angeles (AFP) - Quarterback Andrew Luck stole the show on a night when the Indianapolis Colts paid homage to their former hero Peyton Manning.

Luck tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another in the Colts' 39-33 win Sunday over the Denver Broncos in Manning's return to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Colts released Manning, 37, in March, and the quarterback joined the Denver Broncos.

"Our team prevailed," Lucks said. "What a great atmosphere here."

The game marked Manning's return to Indianapolis for the first time since his departure.

The Colts faithful cheered Manning as a tribute video was played when Denver came out of the tunnel prior to the game. Manning waved and thanked the crowd following the conclusion of the video.

"I just look at it as a chance to play football for a great team. I never looked at it as being the guy who replaced Peyton," Lucks said.

Luck and Indianapolis rock solid defense spoiled Manning's night and snapped the Broncos' 17-game regular season winning streak.

Manning was 29-of-49 for 386 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

"I enjoyed coming back here," Manning said Sunday. "I appreciate the tribute but the game was disappointing for us. I was glad I got to see my old teammates."

Manning hasn't slowed down since joining his new team. Heading into Sunday's game he led the NFL with 2,179 passing yards, 22 touchdowns -- the most ever through the first six games of a season.

Alex Smith threw for 240 yards while rushing for a touchdown, and the stingy Kansas City defense helped keep the Chiefs unbeaten with a 17-16 victory over the Houston Texans.

The Chiefs held an injury-plagued Houston offense to a pair of Randy Bullock field goals while sacking back up quarterback Case Keenum five times over the final two quarters to make a 14-10 halftime lead stand up.

The surprising Chiefs improved to 7-0 on the season.

Smith finished an efficient 23-of-34 with an interception, while Jamaal Charles rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

"It feels real good," Charles said of being 7-0. "I'm just blessed that we win games and that we continue to win and that we have a defense that fights and saves the offense."

In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Nick Folk made the most of a second chance at a game-winning field goal, drilling a 42-yarder with just over five minutes left in overtime to give the New York Jets a 30-27 win over the New England.

Folk at first pulled a 56-yard try wide to the left, but was given a reprieve when Patriots were called for unsportsmanlike conduct for pushing one of their players into a Jets' blocker. The penalty moved the ball inside the New England 25, and Folk made good on the second attempt to complete New York's comeback from an 11-point halftime deficit.

Cam Newton passed for 204 yards and a touchdown to lead the Carolina Panthers to a 30-15 victory over the St. Louis Rams at Bank of America Stadium.

Before leaving the game with a bad leg injury, Rams quarterback Sam Bradford completed 21 of his 30 pass attempts for 255 yards and a touchdown pass to Zac Stacy.

In other games it was, Atlanta 31 Tampa Bay 23, Washington 45 Chicago 41, Dallas 17 Philadelphia 3, Buffalo 23 Miami 21, Cincinnati 27 Detroit 24, San Diego 24 Jacksonville 6, San Francisco 31 Tennessee 17, Green Bay 31 Cleveland 13, Pittsburgh 19 Baltimore 16.

A subcontractor that built a portion of the HealthCare.gov website that's now working relatively well is being promoted to oversee a thorough revamping of the entire glitch-prone portal, and work will be done by the end of next month, the White House says.

QSSI apparently will replace Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the lead role. OSSI is tasked with identifying problems and prioritizing fixes, Jeffrey Zients, who is in charge of fixing the website, said in a briefing on Friday.

"By the end of November, the vast majority of consumers will be able to successfully and smoothly enroll through HealthCare.gov," Zients said.

HealthCare.gov – the online entry point for uninsured Americans to get coverage under the Affordable Care Act - has turned into an obstacle for people trying to purchase coverage.

Zients told reporters that currently about 90 percent of the website's users are able to set up an account but "as few as 3 in 10 are getting through the process."

He said that a team of "leading managers and programmers" drawn from government and the private sector assessed the problem with the portal and determined "it is fixable."

Reuters says QSSI "produced the federal data hub and a software tool for creating online consumer accounts, which was at the center of early logjam problems."

Quincy Jones sues Michael Jackson's estate

(AP) — Quincy Jones sued Michael Jackson's estate on Friday claiming he is owed millions in royalties and production fees on some of the superstar's greatest hits.

Jones' lawsuit seeks at least $10 million from the singer's estate and Sony Music Entertainment, claiming the entities improperly re-edited songs to deprive him of royalties and production fees. The music has been used in the film "This Is It" and a pair of Cirque du Soleil shows based on the King of Pop's songs, the lawsuit states.

Jones also claims that he should have received a producer's credit on the music in "This Is It." His lawsuit seeks an accounting of the estate's profits from the works so that Jones can determine how much he is owed.

The producer worked with Jackson on three of his most popular solo albums, "Off the Wall," ''Thriller" and "Bad."

Jackson's estate wrote in a statement that it was saddened by Jones' lawsuit. "To the best of its knowledge, Mr. Jones has been appropriately compensated over approximately 35 years for his work with Michael," the statement said.

An after-hours message left at Sony Music's New York offices was not immediately returned.

Jackson's hits "Billie Jean," ''Thriller" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" are among the songs Jones claims were re-edited to deprive him of royalties and his producer's fee.

Jones' lawsuit states the producer's contracts called for him to have the first opportunity to re-edit or alter the songs, in part to protect his reputation.

Review: WebEx vs. GoToMeeting vs. MyTrueCloud

October 25, 2013

Thomas Friedman famously announced that "the world is flat" in his 2005 book of that name. He was writing about globalization. In Friedman's view, voice over Internet (VoIP), file sharing, and wireless were the "steroids" that have accelerated the flattening of global commerce. Today I would add video over Internet, which has become more and more prevalent as bandwidth has improved.

The two leaders in the business Web conferencing space are Cisco WebEx and Citrix GoToMeeting. A new product, My Web Conferences from a company named MyTrueCloud, promises to offer these leaders some lower-priced competition, though it lacks some of the refinements of the older products -- and the established players are both upgrading their offerings and decreasing their base prices in response to less expensive business services and free consumer offerings.

Some businesses do use consumer products for voice and video over the Internet: Microsoft Skype, Google Hangouts, and Google Voice (no video) are three I've used extensively. While these can be useful, they don't quite meet the criteria for business-grade Web conferencing.

These higher-end products are expected to simultaneously deliver desktop shares, video, and audio; to provide high reliability and high quality; to integrate with common desktop software; and to work with mobile devices. They're also expected to handle large conference broadcasts, either in the base service or via a separate product. As we will see, there's a bit of variation among the business-grade products we are considering in all of these areas, as well as some differences in the bundling strategies.
