Famous mostly for her fried chicken and gravy, Food Network chef and author Paula Deen is now getting noticed for her shrinking waistline. The 65-year-old Southern culinary expert, who announced in January she had type 2 diabetes, recently dropped two pants sizes, reports People magazine, the result of eating half-size portions and regular exercise.
Deen says while she doesn?t know how much she weighs, the better fitting wardrobe and improved lifestyle changes are all the encouragement she needs.
"We don't own a scale in our house," Deen tells People. "Every six months I go for a physical and find out. Now it's time to see the doctor. She'll be so happy if I've lost weight."
For fans concerned all this healthy behavior marks the end of Deen?s celebrated comfort foods, fear not. Though she may have reaped negative attention over the effects her rich menu have had on personal diet regime, she continues to feed audiences with her prized cuisine. In fact, the article points out a brunch she just hosted included nothing short of chicken and waffles, jambalaya, and strawberry margarita mousse. How?s that for sumptuous?

The doors are done EXCEPT drilling for the European hidden hinges. When I bought the hinges, I bought a Teflon setup block for setting up the drill press and the jig for drilling the holes in the face frame. These are 120? Blum face frame clip hidden hinges. I fit and installed drawers in one outer section and decided to dry fit the European hinges. Thanks to good Karma, luck or whatever you want to call it?.The hinges won?t allow the drawers to come out! The doors fold back in on the hinge when opened. Thus the drawer slide strikes the door. Well Vern..it?s not going to work with those hinges. I researched it at the site where I bought it and it didn?t point that minor thing out. I researched the same Blum hinge at another site and it showed that it folds back into itself and the slides won?t clear.
I had taken a scrap piece of oak lying in my cutoff box, drilled it, mounted the hinge then held it place on the face frame to discover this phenomena. So?.I didn?t drill the doors or the face frame?.. If I had drilled the doors with that 35mm hole, I?d be crying right now.
Dry fitting should be a regular part of building and assembling if you are a rank amateur like me.

At some point in their careers, supervisors will be responsible for conducting interviews and hiring new employees. Most supervisors know what questions they are not permitted to ask under the law, but few know how to structure an interview process and ask questions to assess which candidates are best suited for the position and the organization. Interview questions tend only to reveal how well a person interviews, not how well they will do on the job.
In this workshop participants will be introduced to a strategy for identifying key work habits, developing appropriately phrased questions, and probing for details that will aid in the hiring decisions. The interview technique emphasized in this workshop will focus on questions that require details about past behaviors that reflect the values, skills and work habits essential for the job. Participants will have an opportunity to practice interviewing skills and to evaluate the effectiveness of properly phrased questions.
Nadia Rubaii, Ph.D., is associate professor and chair of the Department of Public Administration at Binghamton University. She has more than 20 years of experience teaching graduate courses and professional workshops on all aspects of human resource management. She has worked with leaders of local government and nonprofit organizations throughout the United States and abroad to improve their hiring processes and decisions, overhaul their performance appraisal processes, increase communication skills among supervisors, ensure compliance with laws governing employment relations, and to more effectively manage increasing diversity within the workplace and in the community.
Nadia has given plenary presentations at numerous national and international conferences. She is active in the International City/County Management Association, having made presentations and provided training at several of their annual conferences, and having authored articles for their publications and a major white paper for their congressional lobbying efforts. Nadia grew up in the Cortland-Ithaca area, attended school at what was then SUNY-Binghamton, and then worked for more than 15 years in southern New Mexico. She returned to upstate New York in 2004 to be closer to family members, several of whom still reside in Ithaca.

BOSTON (AP) ? U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials plan to investigate whether inhalable caffeine sold in lipstick-sized canisters is safe for consumers and if its manufacturer was right to brand it as a dietary supplement.
AeroShot went on the market late last month in Massachusetts and New York, and it?s also available in France. Consumers put one end of the canister in their mouths and breathe in, releasing a fine powder that dissolves almost instantly.
Each grey-and-yellow plastic canister contains B vitamins, plus 100 milligrams of caffeine powder, about the equivalent of the caffeine in a large cup of coffee.
AeroShot inventor, Harvard biomedical engineering professor David Edwards, says the product is safe and doesn?t contain taurine and other common additives used to enhance the caffeine effect in energy drinks.
AeroShot didn?t require FDA review before hitting the U.S. market because it?s sold as a dietary supplement. But New York?s U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said he met with FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg and she agreed to review the safety and legality of AeroShot.
?I am worried about how a product like this impacts kids and teens, who are particularly vulnerable to overusing a product that allows one to take hit after hit after hit, in rapid succession,? Schumer said.
Tom Hadfield, chief executive of Breathable Foods, which makes AeroShot in France, did not immediately respond to a phone message and email seeking comment. A publicist for the company also did not respond to a phone message and email seeking comment.
Sen. Schumer planned to announce the AeroShot review Sunday.
Meanwhile, an FDA official who was at the meeting confirmed the decision, telling The Associated Press that the review will include a study of the law to determine whether AeroShot qualifies as a dietary supplement. The product will also be tested to figure out whether it?s safe for consumption, the official said.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because that official was not authorized to discuss the matter.
Schumer pressed the FDA in December to review AeroShot, saying he fears that it will be used as a club drug so that young people can keep going until they drop. He cited incidents that occurred last year when students looking for a quick and cheap buzz began consuming caffeine-packed alcoholic drinks they dubbed ?blackout in a can? because of their potency.
Pressure from the senator and others helped persuade the FDA to stop the marketing, distribution and sale of these beverages, including Four Loko.
?We need to make sure that AeroShot does not become the next Four Loko by facilitating dangerous levels of drinking among teenagers and college students,? Schumer said in a statement.
Breathable Foods says the product is different from the potent beverages. The company says that it?s not targeting anyone under 18 and that AeroShot safely delivers caffeine into the mouth, just like coffee does.
A single unit costs $2.99 at convenience stores, mom-and-pops, and liquor and online stores. The product packaging warns people not to consume more than three AeroShots a day.
?When used in accordance with its label, AeroShot provides a safe shot of caffeine and B vitamins for ingestion,? the manufacturer says on its website. ?Caffeine has been proven to offer a variety of potential benefits for health to individuals when consumed in moderation, from providing energy to enhancing attention and focus.?
AeroShot, the flagship product of Cambridge, Mass.-based Breathable Foods, is the product of a conversation that Edwards had with celebrity French chef Thierry Marks over lunch in the summer of 2007.
The first venture Edwards worked on with Harvard students was the breathable chocolate, called Le Whif. Now he?s preparing to promote a product called Le Whaf, which involves putting food and drinks in futuristic-looking glass bowls and turning them into low calorie clouds of flavor.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? As a young state senator 30 years ago, Paul Pfeifer helped write Ohio's death penalty law. Today, as the senior member of the state Supreme Court, he's trying to eliminate it.
It's not uncommon for sitting judges to change their mind on the death penalty ? U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun famously said in 1994 he would no longer "tinker with the machinery of death" ? but Pfeifer may be the only one to argue so ardently against a capital punishment law he himself created, and yet continue to rule on death penalty cases.
"I have concluded that the death sentence makes no sense to me at this point when you can have life without the possibility of parole," Pfeifer said in his most recent public comments, testifying in December in favor a bill to abolish Ohio's law. "I don't see what society gains from that."
After the U.S. Supreme Court declared capital punishment unconstitutional in 1972, states spent several years rewriting their laws; those enacted by Florida, Georgia and Texas ultimately met the court's threshold for constitutionality. Other states had to follow those models to have their laws upheld. Ohio's first attempt, in 1974, was found unconstitutional, but the second try, when Pfeifer was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was enacted in 1981 and has never been successfully challenged. Lawmakers pledged at the time to draft a law reserved for the most heinous murders.
At least two county prosecutors say Pfeifer should stop ruling on death sentences, including Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters, who said that Pfeifer's actions were inappropriate. "It gives rise to a credible inference that he cannot be fair to both sides," Deters said recently.
Pfeifer's position is unusual but on solid legal ground as long as he keeps his opinions out of his rulings, said Marianna Bettman, a University of Cincinnati law professor and former state appeals court judge.
Ohio has 148 inmates on death row. Executions are temporarily on hold while federal courts review the state's lethal injection procedures, but that delay is not expected to last forever. The Democrat-sponsored bill to abolish the death penalty has little chance of passing.
Pfeifer, a Republican, has always charted his own course on the court. For years he was a member of a foursome ? two Democrats and two moderate Republicans ? dubbed "the Gang of Four" for a series of 4-3 rulings that critics said were anti-business and favored Democrats and their causes. He's also not afraid of mud-slinging: In his spare time, the lifelong farmer raises Black Angus cattle.
Pfeifer had been on the court only two years when, in 1994, he dissented on a vote upholding the death penalty for a man sentenced to death for shooting his ex-girlfriend at the elementary school where she worked as a custodian. Already, he appeared to be having his doubts, writing that "the death penalty is special" and should be "reserved for those committing what the state views as the most heinous of murders." That defendant, John Simko, died of natural causes on death row in 1997.
Pfeifer made similar statements in court opinions over the years. He took his position public in 2001, calling unsuccessfully for an independent panel to review the law. He began to complain that prosecutors were overusing the statute, seeking death sentences in domestic quarrels that went bad instead of for the worst of the worst killers.
He often cites the case of Richard Nields, who murdered his girlfriend in their southwestern Ohio home in 1997, then stole her car and travelers' checks, as an example of overreaching by prosecutors.
"This case is not about robbery," Pfeifer wrote in his dissent to the court's 2001 decision upholding Nields' death sentence. "It is about alcoholism, rage and rejection and about Nields' inability to cope with any of them." Ultimately, Gov. Ted Strickland agreed and in 2010 changed Nields' sentence to life without parole.
In January 2011, Pfeifer made his strongest statements to date, calling on Gov. John Kasich to empty death row.
Pfeifer says he's required as a judge to take positions to make laws better, hence his current stand. He's also required to rule according to the law and the Constitution, which he says he does. Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor says she's comfortable Pfeifer is following the law and not showing bias.
Since 2001, Pfeifer has written the majority opinion upholding death sentences in five cases, dissented in two others and upheld death sentences while disagreeing on aspects of the decision in four other cases.
As recently as December, Pfeifer set an execution date, signing the order for a man who raped and killed his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter.
Ohio first allowed the option of life without parole instead of a death sentence in 1996, then changed the law in 2005 to make it even easier to put killers behind bars for life while skipping death penalty charges altogether. Pfeifer says those changes have made the death penalty unnecessary.
State Rep. Ron Young, a conservative Republican, challenged Pfeifer on this point in December, arguing that removing the death penalty would create a slippery slope where eventually life without parole would be challenged as too harsh.
Pfeifer's experience as a death penalty supporter-turned-opponent is not isolated.
Gerald Kogan, a retired chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court who prosecuted death penalty cases early in his legal career, now says the death penalty should be abolished, with the possible exception of worst of the worst defendants such as Osama bin Laden or a mass serial killer.
Rudy Gerber helped write Arizona's death penalty law in the 1970s but now opposes capital punishment and represents death row defendants trying to escape the law he created.
In California, Don Heller authored a 1978 ballot initiative that created the state's death penalty law. Thirty years later, with more than 700 inmates on death row, Heller has changed course and is advocating the law's demise, saying it's too prone to human error.

COMMENTARY | State after state in the Republican nomination shows an incredible amount of apathy among GOP voters. The fractions of registered Republicans showing up are frighteningly small. But now to the list of dramatically lower turnout we must add the states that held their primaries on Feb. 7 (Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri) and Saturday (Maine). Only South Carolina has shown any measure of political excitement this primary season.
Myth 1: Everyone Is Staying Home Because They Think Romney Has Wrapped It Up.
That myth was advanced by Ari Fleischer and John Sununu. But turnout was at its highest after the New Hampshire primary, when Romney looked the most dominant. Even when polls showed a tight contest between Romney and Rick Santorum, turnout was almost 50 percent lower than in 2008 in Colorado.
Myth 2: It's The Weather That Is To Blame For The Low Turnouts.
One county in Maine (Washington), "had to cancel" its caucus (as Ron Paul supporters cried foul) due to bad weather, but that affected only 200 voters. Out of the 258,000 registered Republicans in Maine, only about 2 percent showed up Saturday .
