Michelle Obama Fashion Watch: First Lady Shines at White House Correspondents' Dinner

President Barack Obama joked at the White House Correspondents' dinner this weekend that an alarming percentage of poll respondents prefer his better half.

Self-deprecation aside, First Lady Michelle Obama more than holds her own, and not just when it comes to besting Ellen at pushups or being a fashion icon.

For Saturday's Hollywood-meets-Washington bash, President Obama's wife, 48, looked regal yet flirty in a strapless paisley organza gown by Naemm Khan:

Beautiful Michelle Obama Photo

The mother of two accentuated the dress by wearing her hair in loose, tousled waves, accessorized with gold hoop earrings. As always, the end result was stunning.

Mrs. Obama cracked up sitting next to the night's host Jimmy Kimmel, who roasted the President and scores of other A-list attendees during a 25-minute speech.

The night's guests included George Clooney, Reese Witherspoon, Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria, Anna Paquin, Steven Spielberg, Tony Romo, Candice Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Kate Hudson, Rick Santorum and Lindsay Lohan.

What do you think of Michelle Obama's dress?

Google+ Share button gives you another option aside from plain 'ol +1s

Image

Although Google's had its +1 button all over the web for some time now, helping folks show their allegiance to things they like, it's previously lacked a dedicated button just for sharing content. That's now changed, as the Google+ development team recently let loose the Share button. The button is similar in appearance to its +1 sibling, but rather than just being a shortcut for quickly slapping content with a virtual high-five, it gives you a way to easily share pages on your Google+ profile. (Yes, you could share through the +1 button, too, but consider this one a bit more focused). Best of all, the Google+ Share button is ready to roll, so move your cursor to the source link below if you'd like to put it on your site or find out more. Happy Liking sharing!

This Mini Bike Is Your Lance-Armstrong-Jr Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

My apartment isn't huge, but I believe it's big enough to warrant some form of transit system. Walking is too slow. I want something small enough that I can pack away, yet robust enough that I can take a quick ride to the fridge, if the mood strikes me. On Sundays, I can take that bike ride I've always dreamed of—kicking off in my room, and then a tour around the living room before a stop-off by the microwave for lunch. Then complete the afternoon with a tour way out to my neighbor's front door. This Kent Mini 8 Folding Bike is the perfect bike for all my (and your!) biking desires. The tires are tiny, so you'll have to get your spindly little legs going pretty quickly if you're planning to enter any races. But the Mini 8's portability means you can take it pretty much anywhere you've ever wanted to take a bike. More »

Sprint reports Q1 2012 results: 1.5 million iPhone sales but a $255 million operating loss

Sprint reports Q1 2012 financials, 1.5 million iPhone sales but a $255 million loss

Sprint Nextel has just deployed its Q1 2012 financials and it's a bit of a mixed bag, with a five percent net revenue growth over this time last year and a whopping 1.5 million sales of that iPhone it paid so dearly for -- twice as many as it sold last quarter and, of those, 44 percent were new subscribers. That helped to drive an overall postpaid subscriber growth of 263,000 but, despite some good news, the company is still suffering a $255 million operating loss and a $863 million net loss. Sprint reaffirmed its LTE plans, a pilot launch of six cities sometime in the middle of this year, with 12,000 sites going online before 2012 turns a year older. Will it be enough? Tune in next quarter to find out.

Google Releases A Playbook For ?Winning With Mobile?

jason speroAs Google continues to push businesses to embrace mobile advertising, it's trying to make that process a little less intimidating with a new publication titled "The Mobile Playbook: The Busy Executive's Guide to Winning with Mobile." The playbook is co-written by Jason Spero, Google's head of mobile sales and strategy (he joined through the acquisition of AdMob), who predicated in February that one million small businesses globally will build a mobile website this year. I don't think any of the advice is particularly revelatory, but it's still a nice distillation of how Google thinks businesses should build their mobile strategies.

Paint Park (for PS Vita)

FourSquare, Netflix, and Twitter represent just a few of the free, fun downloadable programs in the PlayStation Vita's ($299, 4 stars) PS Store?Sony's own Paint Park (free) is now a member of that mix. Paint Park transforms the PS Vita's 5-inch OLED display into a sketchpad that lets you create doodles from scratch, mark up images taken with either of the PS Vita's cameras, and compete in ad-hoc drawing competitions with other Paint Park users that's an entertaining Draw Something alternative. I have a few niggles?such as the marker color selection being limited and the ability for players to vote for themselves in drawing matches, which may result in a high number of ties?but overall, Paint Park is a solid PS Vita app.

Grabbing the Paper and Markers
You can choose to "Paint Alone" or "Paint With Friends" upon launching Paint Park. I selected the former, which caused a dialog box to open that prompted me to "Enter A Room." I did, and encountered an all-white screen that moved me to think that the app froze or crashed. A dog-ear in the lower-right corner of the screen indicated that the blank screen was indeed the "canvas." Paint Park could use a more obvious "Start Drawing!" prompt to welcome users.?

Tapping the downward pointing triangle in the upper-right hand corner of the screen opens a menu containing a numerous options. I could undo strokes, delete a canvas, open a photo album to import images from my PS Vita, select one of four brush sizes, and choose a brush color. There are a dozen colors in total, but the range isn't as wide as I'd like; there's no true purple, but there are two blue and green hues. Also, I would like the ability to assign a color to individual markers to create a Crayola box of sorts; when you change the marker color, the color is change across all the brush sizes.

PlayStation Picaso
A finger is all you need to begin creating artwork. A magnifying glass appears onscreen to help you apply detail, but I had some difficulty coloring within lines and making fine edits due to my large fingers. I made a few quick doodles, including a very rudimentary Batman with the Gotham City skyline in the background (see slideshow).

One of the cooler features is the ability to incorporate real-world photos. Tapping the camera option on the menu lets you snap photos using either the PS Vita's front or rear-facing camera. You can then apply the markers to it as you would with a blank canvas. Flicking the dog-ear brings up a fresh canvas and saves your previous work to your memory card. Note: You'll need Sony's clunky Content Management software to download your creations off the PS Vita.

Take On Me
"Paint With Friends" lets five Paint Park users enter head-to-head competitions (in ad-hoc local wireless play) to see who can create the best art. A player creates a room in which the content is held, and a subject (such as "PCMag.com"?see slideshow), or just let Paint Park choose a topic for the participants. All involved have a limited amount of time to draw the topic or photo. All drawings and photos are displayed on-screen after the timer expires, and everyone has the opportunity to vote for the best image.

Unfortunately, you can vote for yourself, so there may come times when the match ends in a tie should the individual parties think they're truly the best (or just want to troll their friends). Several of my three-person contests ended in ties.

An Artistic Endeavor
Paint Park isn't a "must-have" PS Vita app, but it's one that comes in handy when you want to kill time in a waiting room or during a commute. For some laughs, gather a few PS Vita owning friends together and compete?just don't take the outcomes too seriously.

Nyko's PlayStation Vita speaker stand goes on sale for $30, Power Grip still MIA

Nyko's PlayStation Vita speaker stand goes on sale for $30, Power Grip still MIA

The PlayStation Vita may not have the electric longevity to replace your portable music player, but Nyko figures there's no good reason it can't take up the role of rocking your bedroom. The accessory outfit's stereo speaker charging dock for the Sony's fledgling handheld hasn't changed much since we saw it at CES, save for the fact that it's available now. $30 turns your Vita into the most overpowered alarm clock (assuming you download the upcoming app from the PSN store) your nightstand has ever seen. What of the PS Vita Power Grip? A Nyko representative tell us it's on the way, but doesn't have anything to announce at this time. Read on for the charging dock's official press release.

Yankees crash Fenway party

Two pitchers have given up five homers in a game this season. Both have been Red Sox.

Clay Buchholz joined Josh Beckett in the exclusive club Friday, surrendering five solo homers in a 6-2 loss to the Yankees?on the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park?s opening.

On the plus side, Buchholz?s start was pretty good for someone who allowed five homers. He allowed just the five earned runs overall. He also allowed one unearned run after Dustin Pedroia lost Derek Jeter?s game-opening popup in the sun and had it go off his glove. Jeter later scored on an Alex Rodriguez single.

The homers came off the bats of Nick Swisher, Eric Chavez (two), Rodriguez and Russell Martin. A couple of the earlier ones were wind-aided. The shots hit by A-Rod and Martin didn?t need any assistance. Rodriguez?s homer was his 631st, moving him past Ken Griffey Jr. and into fifth place on the all-time list.

Buchholz was probably the Red Sox starter least likely to give up five homers in a game. He allowed just nine all year on his way to 17 wins in 2010. Overall, he had allowed 44 in 458 career innings, an average of one every 10.4 innings.

Buchholz is now 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA this season. That his three starts have come against the Tigers, Rays and now the Yankees certainly has something to do with that.

On a happier note, Chavez?s two-homer game was his first since April 11, 2006.

The business streaming and digital media

ABSTRACT:

Information technology helps meet today's medical students' needs by providing multiple curriculum delivery methods. Video streaming is an e-learning technology that uses the Internet to deliver curriculum while giving the student control of the content's delivery.

We then describe how the video streaming concept is in the medical profession. Then we describe how the medical institutions especially the Apollo group in Hyderabad, India uses the video streaming in their institutions and also their contribution to it.

INTRODUCTION:

Internet as everyone knows is the ideal network that connects all computers in the world. It is a very popular platform for most of the applications. With the rapid development in communication and communication technology, distribution of continuous media such as video that demand more resources than the other media has gained more popularity. "Video streaming" is a technique of distributing videos over the internet. With greater than ever broadband speeds and website bandwidth, next generation websites are increasing the findings of new ways to engage potential clients. What better way would anyone suggest to communicate quickly with potential clients than with highly potential and visually rich content, which streams directly from our website requiring no download time or additional software to run!? (www1)

For a long time, it has been very easy downloading and playing back high-quality video files from the Internet. Today's web browsers and servers are supporting full-file transfer of the document retrieval. However, full-file transfer is very long, the transfer times are high. Ideally, video have to be streamed across the Internet according to the client request from the web page where the requested embedded videos are present. The client plays the incoming video stream in real time as the data is being received. The idea of video streaming on the network has been gaining a lot of interest.

There is a saying that, one picture is equal to 100 words. It means that, instead of writing 100s of words showing a picture makes people understand easily. In the same way according to the present trend, showing one video makes things very clear instead of showing 100s of pictures. That is the reason why, video streaming is used by every business personnel for the development of their business. It has become the life to business field.

The medical profession is one of the major professions which always look for modernization. The video streaming is also been adopted into their profession by the doctors. The medical education, the hospital maintenance, telemedicine, video assisted surgeries, the CT scans, MRI scans, online publicity and the security maintenance are the areas where the video streaming is used in the medical profession.

Apollo Hospitals is one of the largest health groups in Asia. We are going to consider the Apollo hospitals in Hyderabad for our case. Its services are supported by sophisticated infrastructure and highly experienced medical professionals. Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad was the first institution in India in which a PET CT Scanner was used. It shows their interest in adopting new technologies. (www12)

LITERATURE REVIEW:

Video streaming is generally known for distribution of video over the internet. Before the introduction of streaming continuous media files were downloaded to the disk of the client as a whole before the beginning of the playback. Streaming overlaps transmission and playback and thus eliminates high waiting times and large disk space requirement that occur in downloading approach. Although downloading gives better quality, the quality produced in streaming is within acceptable levels. (Book2)

With true video streaming, users are able to watch files almost as soon as the download begins. The file would be sent to the user through an almost constant streaming, making the user able to watch the video as soon as it arrives. An obvious advantage would be that you no longer need to wait for the video to be completely downloaded. Streaming media has a lot of advantages and benefits like having the ability to broadcast live events - this is called a net-cast or webcast. True video streaming could be done by delivering the video from a server which is specially for streaming. (www2)

A company can broadcast live or recorded presentations and announcements to viewers in different locations at the same time. Many Universities use this for delivering live or recorded guest lectures' to the students at multiple places at the same time. Monitoring corporate properties and assets in real time is also done using the video streaming. It is a powerful communication tool for marketing, as it requires almost no download time and can run directly from the website using a Flash player; a plug-in which is now installed on virtually every internet user's web browser.Streaming Video can fit neatly into the design of your website, providing a compact, attractive and above all engaging way for your website's users to explore your content and services, giving them immediate access to information. (www3)

Online web streaming is one of most popular internet activities. Whatsoever you want to watch in the video from across the world, news recaps, TV shows, tutorials or funny videos, you are guaranteed to find something you like at one of the top five video streaming web sites. Besides watching television anywhere in the world, non-entertainment applications for streaming video are being developed. Webcam Surveyor is a webcam software system that combines video surveillance and video capturing tools. With this software you can record all video activity at your home or office, activated with motion detection and Webcam Surveyor will alert you by sending an e-mail and uploading images to an FTP site. This will make it possible to remotely observe activity from a surveillance camera. You can remotely watch surveillance cameras on your mobile device or laptop for additional security. (www5)

The television programs that are being broadcasted are also a form of video streaming. The videos that are telecasted live are also of the same form. They are the applications of video streaming. In the car industry, a customer can be shown the promotional videos before buying the car. One of the most common streaming media applications outsourced by corporations to CDNs is the live webcasting. A live webcasting component varies from one provider to another and tends to have people asking a lot of questions. Utilizing streaming video technology in a live environment is a great way to take advantage of global communication at a fraction of second at the cost of traditional broadcast mediums. When making the decision to use the Internet to broadcast your message, there are many decisions to make. Some corporations have the in-house resources to make the broadcast happen, but most of the companies need to outsource the live event to a service provider. (Book 1)

The other industry where it is mostly and rapidly used is the business analysis field.

Here the business analysts use this for the instant update of the business details, for example, shares update, stocks update etc. The share market uses this very highly because shares is the only business where the figures and analysis change in fraction of seconds. The profit and loss plays a big role here so, every second is precious and hence the video conferencing and the teleconferencing are very frequently followed. For this most of the TV channels telecast live interviews and recorded views of the business analysts. This would be of great help to the investors and share holders.

CASE DESCRIPTION:

Video Streaming & Medical Profession:

A change always leads to modernization. In olden days, the medical professors used to demonstrate the surgeries on human bodies to their students. But they felt it difficult to demonstrate that to large number of students as the operation theatre cannot accommodate all of them at a time. Then thought the medical practitioners, "Why not use video streaming in Medical profession?". They adopted video streaming in medical profession for overcoming this problem. Using this, the professors have started demonstrating the surgeries from the operation theatre and the students watch them visually sitting in the class rooms. The students can even ask queries and can get the replies from their professors. (www6)

They even went a step forward using it in surgeries. The ophthalmologists use it for surgeries regarding eyes. They also use it for the general check up of the patients. The heart surgeries can also be done using the live video streaming. Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery is a type of thoracic surgery performed using a small video camerathat is introduced into the patient's chest via a scope where the surgeonis able to view the instruments that are being used along with the anatomy that is being operated on. (www7)

Now-a-days everyone had become health conscious, which is of course a very important of life. As a result of this almost all the hospitals have started to allot some space in their hospital websites for some videos related to tips and health care. The websites related to the health care centres or the hospitals consists of many pictures and videos of their achievements and their service, these videos can be streamed from any place in the world. In the major surgeries such as heart surgeries and many other surgeries, the doctors insert instruments with a micro camera which shows the internal view of the patient's body. Seeing these in the monitor doctors operate the patient. (Journal 1)

Strengthening the saying, "to err is human" errors in surgeries have now-a-days become common and they contribute to complications for patients.Between the period of May 2000 and August 2006, 1108 selective cases were studied. There were 2684 errors in nearly 87.1% of these cases. Technical errors were 27.8%, contamination errors 25.3%, failure of the equipment or missing of the equipment was found in 18.2%, or errors due to delay were 12.5%. Of these errors, 22.6% were considered major and 77.4% were minor. Of all these errors, 78.5% were tested preventable. 80.6% were major errors. Of the error-related complications, 74.2% were declared as preventable. So it is understood that most of these errors were done due to the negligence of the medical staff. (www8)

Taking this into consideration, the patient is given a chance to appeal for justice if any errors took place in the surgery. With the help video recordings of the surgery the court investigates the case. (www9)

Example:

An elderly lady underwent a surgery for brainaneurysmhaving the defective blood vessel embolized and a platinum coil to be inserted, effectively blocking it off from the vascular system. Unfortunately, during the surgery a medication mistake caused her to die a languishing death after she was injected with chlorohexidine, a topical antiseptic which is toxic to the body. Theclearskincleanser was in an unmarked container next to the clear dye that was intended to be injected. She got extreme leg pain and swelling that went on to cause tissue death and organ dysfunction. She suffered a stroke, kidney failure, limb necrosis requiring amputation and heart attacks in the 19 days before her death. The lady's relatives have claimed compensation in the court of law on the error made by the doctors during the surgery. Examining the videos recorded on the account of the surgery, the court's judgement was against the doctors. So, video streaming plays a very important role in the medical profession. (www10)

The founder and chairman of Apollo Groups, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy says that, their mission is to bring healthcare of international standards within the reach of every individual. The Apollo hospitals are always first in adopting the advanced technology. They have been using video streaming in many ways in their institutions for the healthcare of the individuals. They are planning to extend super speciality services to every remote corner of the globe by using the technological developments and video streaming techniques to create benchmark standards in the field of medicine. (www13)

Apollo services (video streaming):

Telemedicine:

Tele-Pathology - By using this, the microscopic view can be shared with pathologists sitting in different locations for instant reports through streaming.

Tele-Cardiology - Here the transfer of ECG and Echo Cardiogram will take place for gaining the opinion of the experts.

Remote ICU Monitoring It is an excellent solution for providing critical care to the patients who are in remote areas with minimum healthcare facilities. Vital parameters of the patient can be monitored from the multi-speciality hospital through TV monitoring.

Tele-Radiology The transferring of the digitized medical images and clippings like X-rays, MRIs and CT scans from one location to another for reports. (www14)

Key Advantages:

In General:
  • A company can archive the history of its accomplishments or events for future reference and can produce its promotional CDs, DVDs and other online presentations.
  • In the travel industry the organizers can showcase their resorts in form of video samples.
  • Real Estate companies can show the videos of the house to the buyers with clicking a button. They can see and hear taking them from the front view, through the bathrooms and out the backyard.
  • Businesses looking for the generation of revenue from online ventures, always find the video as the single most effective representation for their products and services. etc., (www16)
In Medical Profession (Apollo):
  • They publish training videos from equipment manufacturers to ensure proper use of medical devices and instruments, such as heart monitors, MRI, and radiology.
  • They provide hospital news and information to staff and visitors, broadcast to always-on plasma screens located in hallways, cafeterias, and lobbies.
  • They also provide desktop video-based training and continuing education to physicians, nurses, medical technicians, and other staff to reduce time out of the hospital.

Key Disadvantages:

In General:
  • Almost every video on the World Wide Web is virus infected. Streaming these infected videos from the video streaming websites will lead to the malfunctioning of the computer.
  • Almost 3/4th of the videos on the web are having adult content in them. It creates a bad impact in the youth.
  • The video streaming websites are very free to upload and download, and because of this the piracy is being developed. (Journal 3)
  • In Medical Profession (Apollo):
  • Not all hospitals can afford it in the cost perspective.
  • The video assisted surgeries often take lot of time when compared to the traditional one. The laparoscopic surgery can increase the risk of developing blood clots and wounds. (www17)

3 Tips For Finding Love At Coachella | YourTango

coachella
A couple makes out at the Coachella music festival in Indio, CA.

Don't have sex in a Port-a-Potty, and more tips for surviving the Coachella music festival.

I've been to Coachella once. It was back in the day when I could stomach outdoor concerts that consisted of thousands of people whacked out of their mind on drugs and alcohol, and each one of them hoping to get laid. I'm not judging these people, because I was one of them.

Coachella, which is coming up on its second weekend this year, has come a long way since it started in 1999 when on-site camping was not even permitted, and has evolved into something more mainstream. Although the bands that play run the gamut from totally obscure to obscenely famous (Madonna played in 2006, for example), it still seems to be the go-to destination every April for both music aficionados and wannabes looking to prove to themselves and others that why yes, they are cool.

Whether you're going to Coachella, already there, or just curious about it, here are some tips for finding love (likely very short-term love) at the annual festival:

1. Expect to find a mixed crowd. Once upon a time, when Coachella wasn't as painfully mainstream as it is now, the crowd was crawling with hot indie guys, with their gorgeous half-sleeve tattoos and beat up old Chucks, but these days it's not quite the same. Proof? Like 10 of my friend's finance buddies went this year and had never even heard of single band ? they just happened to have the money to go, unlike many die-hard fans who lack the funds. But despite these types, there are still those who go for the music and meeting people, as opposed to the scene. Read the rest of the tips...

Brinware Plate & Mat Giveaway | Weelicious ? - Fast, Easy & Fresh ...

Plastic plates and food trays. I just can?t do it anymore. Trust me, I did for a while. Yes, they say ?dishwasher safe? on the bottom, but as I gradually watched the paint peel off of them in wash after wash, I started to get a bit freaked out. As I once read somewhere, dishwasher safe means safe for your dishwasher ? not necessarily you. Add to that concern the effects (both known and unknown) that piping hot food has when it comes into contact with plastic, and it?s good enough reason to rethink how you serve your food. One side of me says, we?ll I?ve made it to this age and heaven knows that I must have drank from and eaten off of much worse over the past 30 or so years, but with age also comes wisdom and in my opinion, stainless steel and glass are the best people-safe options for food.

Some moms of young kids have the very valid concern that glass breaks too easily. Enter Brinware. I recently got these beautiful Brinware plates for my kids and they just love them. I do too. Not only are they lovely to look at, but if they fall on the ground they are outfitted with brightly colored, removable silicone sleeves which are fun and protect the tempered glass plates inside.

Brinware is generously offering FIVE weelicious moms the chance to win a set of plates and their food grade silicone placemats. For a chance to win, just tell me what you?re most looking forward to this Mother?s Day. And if you simply can?t wait to find out if you?re one of the lucky winners and want to go ahead and get a set now, Brinware is offering weelicious readers a 20% discount! Just enter the code: WEE20 at checkout.

Good luck!

Dark matter search turns up empty

New calculations suggest dearth of invisible substance in solar neighborhood

Web edition : 4:08 pm

Scientists using Earth-based experiments to detect particles of dark matter might now know why they keep coming up empty-handed: There may be no dark matter in the solar neighborhood ? at least, not within 13,000 light-years, reports a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

Though dark matter, a mysterious substance different from ordinary, visible matter, supposedly makes up more than 80 percent of the matter in the universe, the new work suggests that the solar system lives in a dark matter desert. That?s a problem, because most scientists think the the Milky Way galaxy is embedded in a large halo of dark matter.

If the results hold, scientists will have to reconsider what sort of shape that dark matter halo takes, although it?s unlikely to cause any major cosmological upheavals.

?This doesn?t mean that dark matter does not exist,? says study coauthor Christian Moni Bidin, an astronomer at the Universidad de Concepcion in Chile. ?The result is only that dark matter is not where we expected it.?

Dark matter explains many things, including the rotation speed of the Milky Way. Its outer reaches spin more rapidly than expected based on the amount of mass sequestered in visible stars. Scientists have deduced that unseen matter, probably in the form of exotic subatomic particles, engulfs the speeding galaxy, exerting a gravitational force that accounts for the rapid rotation.

Since dark matter is invisible, scientists can?t directly observe it in space. Instead, they infer its presence by looking for its gravitational effect on things like stars, gas, and light from distant galaxies. For the new work, a team in Chile went hunting for changes in the paths of stars crossing the sky, sinuous indicators that masses of the dark stuff lay nearby.

More than a year ago, astronomers studied the motion of roughly 400 red giant stars that hovered far above the galactic plane in the vicinity of the solar system. Now, the team in Chile has calculated the amount of matter needed to explain the stars? movements. That total equals the mass of stuff they can see.?

Ergo, no dark matter.

It?s a challenging measurement, and one that may not have been done right, says Chris Flynn, an astronomer at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. When Flynn applied the team?s method to a simulated galaxy with known quantities of dark matter and stars, it failed to detect the simulated dark matter. ?My best bet is that something has gone astray in the measurements or analysis,? says Flynn, a referee of the paper. ?I was able to show to my own satisfaction that there was a problem of some kind in the method, but couldn't diagnose where the problem really is.?

Moni Bidin says future observations of millions of stars should help sort out what?s going on. Right now, he?s hesitant to infer too much from the results, suggesting mainly that scientists trying to capture dark matter particles on Earth might be fighting a losing battle. If the results hold, there are broader consequences for the distribution of dark matter around the Milky Way.

Instead of being spherical, the dark halo might be elongated and shaped more like a cigar, a squashed beach ball, or a rugby ball (kind of like a bloated American football). A cigar or rugby ball oriented perpendicularly to the galactic plane would fit the absence of dark matter near the sun. ?But models and theories have great trouble explaining the observation of this shape,? Moni Bidin says.

Astronomer Sukanya Chakrabarti notes that theories describing the distribution and evolution of dark matter on galactic scales are incomplete. Perhaps, she notes, reworking those theories will make it easier to generate something like a cigar-shaped halo, piercing the heart of the galaxy. ?We understand the skeletal structure of the universe quite well,? says Chakrabarti, of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. ?But if you zoom in to one galaxy, and try to understand the guts of galaxy evolution, there are many physics things we haven?t put in.?

Some scientists have already suggested that the Milky Way?s halo is not spherical and is instead more like a squished beach ball ? a shape consistent with the new results, says astrophysicist David Law at the University of Toronto in Canada. Law defined the halo?s shape by looking at how the Milky Way?s satellite galaxies behave. His measurements, published in 2010, suggested a squished sphere, with the distribution of dark matter dropping off in the solar neighborhood. That kind of shape is consistent with these results, Law argues. But he, too, notes that the new results should be approached with caution.

?I don?t think it?s quite time to say that there is no dark matter in the solar neighborhood at all,? Law says. ?That isn?t necessarily the most likely explanation.?
